Guest GI-Joe
Hi Tango Niner, You mentioned in an old post that you just upgraded two pilots with 20 months experience. I am seriously curious: How did the two get upgrades when several of my former coworkers have been there over 20 months and have yet to see the left seat? Are the two aforementioned slated for the training department? Thanks, G.Joe
Tango Niner
Hi GI, I'm just going by what the guys told me during the pre-brief. Perhaps in reality it was 22 months? Some guys might base their "start" time on day 1 of groundschool (the most correct answer!); others might say something like "well, I got on line in July, so I've been here 20 months." Know what I mean? In any case, if you have friends that have been here 20 months, I'd think their upgrade is coming up pretty quick! Everybody's going in order; there's no upgrade "line jumping" for training dept positions or anything like that. That said, I've seen that there's sometimes a pilot who's junior to another one who may get an upgrade up to 3 or 4 weeks ahead of the senior guy based on the senior guy's vacation bid, days off requests, etc. It boils down to this: our training schedulers say "OK, who are the next 2 guys that we can grab to upgrade?" and we get 'em. Sometimes this means a minor disparity. Generally, though, it all comes out in the wash. When we're in an expansion mode like we are now, the upgrades race through the seniority list so fast that I don't think anybody gets too upset if someone goes 2 or 3 weeks ahead of you. If our growth slows, it can become an issue and it will be addressed. Finally, don't forget that like every other company, we bypass some pilots because we feel that they're not yet ready for the upgrade. If a bypass occurs we generally give them another look after 6 months, and reassess. A bypass is something that the pilot may or may not tell you about if you ask him, which I think is fair. Hope this helps, T9
Tango Niner
I should add, just for the sake of reinforcing the point, that I just did some new captain line indoc on a guy (not one of the ones in the upgrade ride I talked about earlier) who said he started around July of '01. So the "just under 2 years" benchmark seems pretty consistent, at least for now. Cheers T9
Guest GI-Joe
Thanks, Tango Niner. Good luck to you and all those enjoying the expansion ride - I am somewhat jealous! Take care. G. Joe
Guest Flightlevel
I finished upgrading in March,it was one month shy of two years from my start date of Apr. 02 2001. May of 2001 course was the same...one month early. Then the next course after May 2001 was Sept 2001 so these are the fellas that are upgrading in the year and a half zone again. As we continue to hire and receive new a/c,this requires about 8 skips a month from now till who knows when.Enjoying the ride so far having come from two failed companies, one red and one blue, just hope it lasts but I must add I have never felt such confidence in management and enjoyed work this much.(I'm the king of being pesimistic)
