Guest Air Bear
Hey All! Well, we all knew that this was only a matter of time. I have some gooood friends in the know telling me that the movement is now under foot to start a pilot union at Westjet. Apparently there's a few ex-ALPA types who refuse to drink the Kool-aid that the rich captains and Beddoe are trying to force feed 'em. I can't figure out why though? Aren't the f/o's there happy taking home $800 every couple of weeks? Stocks been levelling off as well. How long for that left seat now boys? Anyway, this is one ex-charter brat that says it's about time. Get the workin' conditions good enuff (i.e.- no more pilots cleaning the back between turns) and I might even apply there myself!!! Cheers, Air Bear
wjaer
Please do not apply. Not if you are too good to help turn a plane...
Tango Niner
I just did an upgrade ride on 2 guys that have been here 20 months. Cheers T9 P.S. They both looked pretty happy to me ;-)
Guest chiselcharter
It's a shame (sham) that these low costs are taking the last bit of respect from the pilot ranks in this country. It's unfortunate this time round the 'infatuation stage' is lowering the wage bar. Once you do unionize, and you will, there will be no clear industry wage leader to support your wage demands. It will take years to climb back up to the industry standard wage hill. At the same time the public will realize if you don't pay to travel the country, and pilots wages are low, pilot entrants diminish. Demand will raise pricing to reality and the cycle will once again begin. This is one step we should have avoided. No one said pilots were smart, and it's beginning to show. Guest Boeing Pilot
Just curious, During your short turn arounds, who is taking care of the duties required up front? I think passengers(including myself who flew 737's) would prefer you guys up front preparing for a safe departure than in the back cleaning up garbage. I've heard other people who have flown on WestJet make the same comment.
Guest Boeing Pilot
I don't think anyone is to good to clean up garbage. But while you're doing someone elses job who is doing yours? I think passengers(including myself who flew 737's) instead of cleaning up garbage, would prefer you guys up front preparing for a safe departure, especially on a 30 minute or less turn. I've heard other people who have flown on WestJet make the same comment.
Guest Terrier
And if you applied you would automatically be accepted? You sound exactly like the type of guy any company would want on board - not.
Guest Ozgood
Ok, I can't resist this one "Instead of cleaning up garbage, would prefer you guys up front preparing for a safe departure, especially on a 30 minute or less turn." There is only one airline in Canada where it takes more than 30 mins to turn an A/C. Let's see, things to do on a turn around: 1.get the Flight Plan and check it out 2.get ATIS 3.get clearance 4.do a walkaround 5.check performance figures 6.do before start checklist 7.check W&Balance All up that takes about 12 minutes (2 guys doing equal work that equals 24 minutes of work done in 12). Each guy takes 5 to go in the back and help out (another equal of 10 minutes of manpower), that still leaves 13 mins to relax or do things even slower. They do what has to be done. We've all seen a 320 pull into the gate, then a few minutes later a 737, then a 737 departing less than 1/2 hour later while the 320 sits for another 20 mins. Quit picking on those WJ guys, nothing wrong with working safely, effectively, and efficiently! If 35,000 employees at AC worked together like that AC would be kicking A$$. Maranatha
Right on, OZ! I have personally wandered through the cabin of my 767 picking up AFTER THE CLEANERS HAD FINISHED. Nothing wrong with that. This may sound like heresy to some of our AC brethren but we do need some of those can-do WJ attitudes at AC. Will it happen? I hope so...but it will take a complete paradigm shift in thinking and I'm not sure that the AC unions are willing. Best Regards, IE.
Flapsforty
Perhaps a cessna 172 would be more your speed? You used the past tense in your post so I assume you couldn't cut it on 37.
Flapsforty
My self respect is fully intact. I make very good money and I suspect over the next few months every one else in the industry will wish to be making what I make and be at a company with a future like I am. Flapsforty
There will be no union, so get over it. And if a few of the f/o's can't suck up few bad days I suggest they go to AC, or Jazz, or Jetsgo, or Canjet, or... what were those other great money making companies? Oh yea, there are no other money making airlines in Canada.
Flapsforty
There will be no union so get over it. If the guys aren't happy here they are welcome to leave and go to Canadas' other profitable airlines.. oh yea, there are none.
Guest stick man
-Check the Take-off flap setting so you don't cut a swath through the rhubarb and have tower scrambling the trucks. Probably added that one, didn't you?
Guest chiselcharter
That's the problem...one 'My' and 4 'I's in a 2 sentence comment. That basically sums up aviation, All for one, and none for all.
Guest Boeing Pilot
Nice insult, especially considering you're sitting in front of a computer and not willing to use your real name. 172, 737? is there much difference? they're both simple aircraft to operate. Anyways, yes it was in the past. I've since moved to a different company and now fly a different aircraft. I've also cleaned up garbage in the past during turn arounds. I just don't think it should be a policy. If you're behind sched and you want to help make up some time then fine. Your job is to operate the aircraft, not clean it. It's my opinion and I'm sure others feel the same. Enjoy your day
BoomerPete
Flaps .... That one was unworthy of you, and I'm sure you know it. The man's point was legitimately expressed, so why the insult ... it makes you look bad, not him.

Flapsforty
I thought you were trying to imply we had a safety issue. If you were, my previous post stands. If not, then I stand corrected, and offer my apologies. Cheers.

Flapsforty
If all the I's in the company put in 100% to doing the job, which is: to make the customer, the shareholders (which is also comprised of employees), and owners happy, then all the I's get more in return. Pretty simple formula.
DEFCON
I've always understood that pilots should do a complete review of dept, enroute, dest, & alt wx prior to dept?
Guest chiselcharter
The Maple Leafs played as I's. If they would have played as a team they wouldn't be saying I have a tee-off time.
