RE: AIR CANADA BAIL OUT

Excerpt from another aviation forum: To AEFORUM Members - Your thoughts on the issue?

quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Maybe it is time to write to the Honourable Transport Minister about the unfair latitude of bailing out Air Canada is to the competition and the unnecessary debt to the taxpayer. If US Air can bring themselves around why can't AC? Have you read what concessions their staff have made?"

Hi ____:

Honestly, even if we were able to influence the government's decision, what is our alternative? You have far more years of experience in the aviation industry than I do. Do you honestly believe that our existing competition could collectively fill the [cement] shoes of our current Air Canada, both domestically and internationally? I have a hard time imagining it and from what I understand so does the government.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if this is all part of a brilliant CEO's plan. Yes, I said brilliant.

- Air Canada mainline will see mass restructuring under CCAA or even bankruptcy protection, and with the help of the inevitable government package, emerge our flagship trans-border and international carrier with a debt-free new sparkle.

- The Tango model is preserved and sees rapid growth through said government package which preserves a large number of [current] mainline jobs, albeit at a reduced pay scale and with higher crew utilization. Zip is merged, or visa-versa, basically becoming what was the 'new' Canada 3000 but with Aeroplan.

Boom! Tens of thousands of direct and indirect job losses are minimized; eliminated are the pressures and the possible hardships associated with the mass expansion of another Canadian carrier.

Either way, WestJet continues to get bigger; steady as she goes!

Write a letter to D.C., but be advised it may take 3-6 months for a reply which, by the way, will be in the form of a (personalized) form letter. I'm almost certain; waste of time if you ask me.

Jason
