JL
Having seen the wreckage it is both an emotional experience as it is a fantastic example of a specific type of failure. Hopefully they can capture it in a digital rendering for VR use for future training

conehead
Yeah, I don’t buy the Center tank explosion story... it was taken down by a missile.
JL
You might as well add the huge methane bubble from the ocean floor that it flew into theory....
Innuendo
I did the YYZ-CDG flight that night and it was very quiet en route and through the layover. Made you think.

JL
It was called the whale fart theory. The methane bubbles idea had been tossed around as an explanation for why a ship may have sunk under mysterious circumstances. The theory being the bubbles reduce the buoyancy of the vessel. In the case of TWA, the methane was the source of the explosion when the 747 flew through it. I found a reference paper which also adds Egypt Air 990, Swiss Air 111 and AF447 to the list of aircraft that encountered a significant amount of methane while flying. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://phe.rockefeller.edu/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Air-France-447-methane-outgassing-hypothesis.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj4tozt14rvAhXDTjABHdN1Da0QFjADegQICRAC&usg=AOvVaw3BbgENwekBWqwq6V9SUFk5
Don Hudson
Hi conehead - you seem very definite regarding cause - can you say why? Interestingly, PanAm 103's wreckage is in a storage yard in England.
