June 9, 2008—Retail gas prices rise above $4 per gallon.

dumb libs.jpg

The 2008 Financial crisis and the fact that oil prices hit an ALL TIME high of over $145 US a gallon probably had nothing to do with it. :whistling:

A preview of the Canadian $$$???  Socialism gone amuck ! Coming soon to a neighbourhood  near you…

In Venezuela, people break off flakes of gold to pay for meals and haircuts

Local currency, the bolivar, has been rendered almost worthless by hyperinflation

To fathom the magnitude of Venezuela’s financial collapse, travel southeast from Caracas, past the oil fields and over the Orinoco River, and head deep into the savanna that blankets one of the remotest corners of the country.

There, in the barber shops and restaurants and hotels that constitute the main strip of one dusty little outpost after another, you’ll find prices displayed in grams of gold.

A one-night stay at a hotel? That’ll be half a gram. Lunch for two at a Chinese restaurant? A quarter of a gram. A haircut? An eighth of a gram, please. Jorge Pena, 20, figured that eighth came to three small flakes — the equivalent of $5. After getting a trim one recent weekday in the town of Tumeremo, he handed them over to his barber, who, satisfied with Pena’s calculation, quickly pocketed them. “You can pay for everything with gold,” Pena says.

In the high-tech global economy of the 21st century, where tap-and-go transactions are the rage, this is about as low tech as it gets.

Most of the world moved on from gold as a medium of exchange over a century ago. Its resurfacing in Venezuela today is the most extreme manifestation of the repudiation of the local currency, the bolivar, that has swept the country. It’s been rendered almost worthless by hyperinflation. (Nicolas Maduro’s regime just lopped another six zeroes off it.)

People simply stopped trusting the bolivar,” says economist Luis Vicente Leon, president of Caracas-based researcher Datanalisis. “It no longer fulfilled its function” as a store of wealth or a means of accounting or a medium of exchange.

Today, only the poorest Venezuelans — those who lack easy access to dollars or other currencies — still use bolivars. “People prefer any currency over the bolivar,” Leon says.

“ People simply stopped trusting the bolivar. It no longer fulfilled its function “

In parts of southeastern Venezuela, that currency is gold.

The land there, a stunning world of table-top mountains and giant waterfalls that cascade into lush valleys, is loaded with the precious metal. The temptation of overnight wealth has lured generations of wannabe miners, searing the names of the region’s towns — El Callao and Guasipati — into Venezuelan folklore.

It's what caused the oil prices to rise to $145/barrel that's important.  The financial crisis caused it crater.

We may be in the same circumstances currently.  It is because of who controls the taps.

Sorry but you have identifed the wrong cause.  In Canada it can be mostly attributed to our Liberal Government who continues to mine the money pit.

While you may constantly be looking to blame Trudeau for the rise in prices, it has happened under all prime ministers.

So that argument is moot.

Get used to higher gas prices, Harper says

Harper says Ottawa not looking at cutting gas taxes

https://www.nationalobserver.com/2015/09/18/opinion/canadians-get-ripped-pumps

A huge disconnect exists between the price of crude oil and gasoline even though crude is the major component in a refiner’s cost. Big Oil is taking advantage of Canadians at the pumps.

The Harper government seems worried voters might figure it out. When the election was called, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) stopped producing the Fuel Focus Report—its bi-weekly window on economic drivers influencing gasoline prices “intended to provide Canadians with regular information on the various aspects of the gasoline market in Canada.”

Obvious price gouging began to emerge in early March. The price of crude fell, but prices at the pump increased. Before Fuel Focus Report data was suspended in July, it showed Canadian refining and marketing margins hitting an all time high of 38.6 cents a litre (see figure 3 in this report).

Between 2000 to 2014, refining and marketing margins averaged 17.7 cents a litre. For the first eight months of 2015, refining and marketing margins averaged 27.3 cents a litre. Canadians have forked over 10 cents a litre more for gasoline during the first two-thirds of this year than we paid on average over the previous fifteen. That’s a dime a litre going straight to the bottom line.

Oil and gas are controlled by corporations, not governments.  The fact that the U.S. has been discovering more domestic oil reserves lately, coupled with the fact they recently were a net exporter of petroleum products, only shows that the flow has been throttled because the demand/price drop during the pandemic isn't what big oil wants.  So now they are in the catbird seat and will stay there until oil rises to the profit levels they want.

It's all about following the money.  Doesn't matter who is pretending to be in charge as the leader of the country.

Back to blaming Harper.......

By the by where is your reaction to my response to your dig at Alberta Municipal Voters?

First, as for your looking for a response, it didn't justify one because it wasn't a dig at Alberta voter, it was just pointing out the reality of how they voted.

You've missed the point completely.  It isn't about blaming politicians, it's about understanding how the system really works.  So stop deflecting.  My perspective is that it doesn't matter who is in charge, they are all the same in that they are controlled by big business.  Would you like to continue to discuss that?

Here in Ontario, during the last provincial election, Ford made a promise to lower gas prices by 10 cents/litre.  Nothing was done, and when he was called on it last week, Ford's response was 'I'll do it if Trudeau does it'.  What kind of leadership is that?  Make a promise, don't do a thing, then blame someone else.  To me it just proves how powerless they are, and how they pander to the corporations.

https://toronto.citynews.ca/2021/10/15/ford-challenges-trudeau-to-lower-federal-gas-taxes-saying-hell-match-every-single-penny/

When running in the 2018 Ontario election, Doug Ford vowed to lower gas prices by 10 cents.

He won the election, but his promise didn’t pan out in the long run.

Instead, gas prices have soared to explosive new heights in recent months, with no sign of relief in sight.

Despite his disappointment, Ford said Friday that he remains committed to giving cash-strapped Ontarians some relief at the pumps. He’s just waiting for Justin Trudeau to make the first move.

Now if you want to discuss Canadian gas prices, yes, Trudeau has brought in the carbon tax.  However, you do have to take into account that you are also rebated on your tax filing.  As I have done, have you calculated how much you are actually paying in carbon tax and comparing that to your rebate?  I am getting back more than I pay.  No complaints here.  So let's discuss reality and not just conservative talking points.

The stupidity continues under the far LEFT Democrats under Biden. He’s almost as bad as Trudeau if that’s at all possible,

IN THE HEIGHT OF THE PANDEMIC!!

” The Journal added that the 1.66 million arrests in Fiscal Year 2021, which started in October 2020, was “the highest annual number ever recorded.”

Biden Admin In Talks To Offer Up To $450K To Every Illegal Border Crosser Separated Under Trump

Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration is reportedly in talks to offer approximately $450,000 to every illegal alien that was separated from their family at the border under the previous administration’s zero-tolerance policy in 2018.

“The U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family, though the final numbers could shift,” The Wall Street Journal reported. “Most of the families that crossed the border illegally from Mexico to seek asylum in the U.S. included one parent and one child.”

The report said that many families would likely get smaller payouts depending on their circumstances and that the total payout could be more than $1 billion. The move comes as the Biden administration works to resolve nearly a thousand lawsuits that have so far been filed by families.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claims that there are several thousands individuals that were separated under the policy.

The report added:

The discussions have been at times contentious. They have taken place over the past few months among a group of dozens of private lawyers representing the families and government lawyers. Some government lawyers have viewed the payouts as excessive for people who had violated the law by crossing the border, the people said. One government lawyer threatened to remove his name from the case out of disagreement with the potential settlement offer, the people said.

Former Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf slammed the move, saying that there were “no limits” to what the Biden administration would do in terms of implementing policy that was damaging to border security and immigration, adding that this latest move “may be at the top of the list.”

The latest move by the Biden administration comes as Biden’s border crisis reached a new level on Friday as data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) showed that the Border Patrol has made approximately 1.66 million arrests of illegal aliens entering the U.S. from Mexico for Fiscal Year 2021.

Border crossings surpassed 1.6 million annually at least twice recently, in 1986 and in 2000,” The Wall Street Journal reported last week. “In 2019, when crossings reached a peak under the Trump administration, the Border Patrol made about 850,000 arrests.”

The Journal added that the 1.66 million arrests in Fiscal Year 2021, which started in October 2020, was “the highest annual number ever recorded.”

CBP said that it recorded 192,001 encounters along the southern border for the month of September, a slight decrease from the previous month.

With Biden and his VP so deeply unpopular now, here is a possible scenario. Trump is getting loyal supporters to be candidates in the mid-terms. As historically happens, the party not in the whitehouse gets a majority in congress and maybe the senate as well in the mod-terms. If the majority is large enough, the following happens.

Congress elects an outsider as speaker pf the house to replace Nancy Pelosi. The speaker is third in line to the presidency by the way. The rules do not say that the speaker has to be elected to congress, therefore Trump is chosen. He gets to stand behind the P and VP in the state of the union address(and can rip hos copy up during the speech).

Congress decides to impeach and remove the P and VP  which are replaced by Trump and his choice to finish off the remaining two years. Then he runs for his second elected term with a total of ten years as president.

We all end up talking about it on his new social media site.

Shock NBC Poll Shows Americans Have ‘Lost Their Confidence’ In Biden, Chuck Todd Says

A new NBC poll shows that a whopping 71% of Americans believe the U.S. is on the wrong track, a 1ST number that does not bode well for the party in charge, NBC’s Chuck Todd noted.

“Just 22 percent of adults say we’re headed in the right direction,” Todd said Sunday on NBC. “A shocking 71 percent say we’re on the wrong track, and that includes a near majority of Democrats who are saying that.”

Scary news for the Democrats,” he said.

The number of Americans who think the country is on the right track has declined 14% since April and 7% since August.

Many of those who changed their minds are Democrats. Back in April, a sizeable majority, 64% of Democrats believed the country was headed in the right direction. Now, only 41% think so.

The shock poll also seems to highlight the flagging spirits of Americans when it comes to the president and his administration.

The “overarching message” of the poll is that “Americans have lost their confidence in President Biden and their optimism for the country, at least they have right now,” Todd said.

Meanwhile, Biden’s job approval rating has continued to sink. His approval rating is now down to a dismal 42%, with 54% disapproving of the job he is currently doing, according to the NBC poll.

“ Democrats face a country whose opinion of President Biden has turned sharply to the negative since April,” said Jeff Horwitt, a Democratic pollster with Hart Research Associates.”

ELDER: Odds and ends, ends at odds

Why doesn’t President Joe Biden place illegal immigrants in college dorms? They would be around people who love them and want them here. They would get better food, housing and medical care. And they would get a firsthand look at the open-mindedness and tolerance of the young American Left.

Just as the welfare state changed the culture of out-of-wedlock births by incentivizing women to marry the government and men to abandon their financial and moral responsibility, free money and eviction moratoriums have changed the culture of work by reducing the stigma of not doing work.

Students in communist China study science, technology, engineering and math. Students in America study “critical race theory.” What could possibly go wrong?

It’s a shame Biden did not choose Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., for Housing and Urban Development Secretary. He could have explained how a socialist can acquire three houses.

If you are black and believe in hard work, accountability and personal responsibility, then you become the black face of white supremacy. If you are white and believe the same things, then you become the proof of white supremacy.

Real quick. Has anyone asked LeBron James what to do about the supply chain backlog?

Reporters described the white woman who threw that egg at me during my gubernatorial campaign as “wearing a gorilla mask.” At the risk of my sounding sexist, how do we know it was a mask? Maybe she was having a bad hair day.

As long as California Democrats hate Republicans more than they hate rising violent crime, rising homelessness, rising cost of living, poor urban schools, bad forest management, water rationing due to inadequate water infrastructure, “rolling brownouts” due to an inadequate power grid, and COVID-19 mandates of dubious legality, California will continue having these problems.

California will not reverse its decline until Democrats and independents, like drug addicts and alcoholics, realize the state has hit bottom. What is the definition of bottom? When a homeless guy takes a dump on your front lawn.

As compliments poured in at the passing of Colin Powell, let us recall the following criticism levelled at him when he served as secretary of state: “In the days of slavery … you got the privilege of living in the house if you served the master. … Colin Powell’s committed to come into the house of the master. When Colin Powell dares to suggest something other than what the master wants to hear, he will be turned back out to pasture.” — Harry Belafonte, 10/8/02.

When I lived in Cleveland, a city with a majority black population, I went to a Harry Belafonte concert in a nearby suburb. Aside from the staff working in the sold-out 3,000 seat theatre, my girlfriend and I were about the only blacks in the audience. Wonder if Harry was thinking, “Thank goodness the master bred the white folks in this house”?

I had a far-left white friend who took pride in living in a nearby “racially diverse” suburb on a “racially diverse” street. A few years later, he moved his family further away to a nearly all-white suburb in search, he said, of “better schools.” I asked him why he continues to vote for the party that opposes school choice. We are no longer friends.

“I have said in the past — and I’ll repeat again –that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed.” — former President Barack Obama, 2008. “So the bottom line is that it’s hard to find a model in which you can practically administer and sustain political support for those kinds of efforts … Everybody potentially can make the claim that we should all be treated fairly.” — Obama, 2016. “So, if you ask me theoretically: ‘Are reparations justified?’ The answer is yes.” — Obama, 2021.

Had Obama not done a 180 on reparations, he would have been cancelled. Cancel culture eats its own.

New Jersey Democrat Senate President Defeated by Truck Driver Who Spent $153 on Campaign

Edward Durr just defeated New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney, the state’s most powerful legislator who is associated with Jersey’s Democrat machine. Sweeney was the longest serving legislative leader in NJ history. In June Sweeney had even reportedly discussed a potential run for Governor in 2025.

New Jersey’s longtime state Senate president has lost reelection, falling to a Republican newcomer who spent less than $200 on the race, and leaving his party reeling.

Edward Durr, a furniture company truck driver and political newcomer, has defeated Sweeney in New Jersey’s 3rd Legislative District, according to results tallied Thursday.

Sweeney’s defeat was unexpected and threw his party’s legislative leadership contest into limbo on Wednesday, when he postponed a meeting set for Thursday. Sweeney had been expected to return as Senate president, but who’ll take over and what margin Democrats will have in the state Legislature is unclear.

Sweeney has served as Senate president since 2010 and was responsible for shepherding Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s progressive agenda through the Legislature, including a phased-in $15 an hour minimum wage, paid sick leave and recreational marijuana legalization.
