Of course.  We all do.  I pay taxes to help keep those services running and I expect the services to be there when I need them.  Some folks incurred additional or unplanned expenses because those services were unavailable when we all paid for them to be there.   Shouldn't we be reimbursed when they are not?

But Specs....you didn't pay your federal income taxes with the expectation of going to the Courthouse on a specific date and for a specific purpose with the acceptance of your tax payment constituting an implied agreement by the governing authorities that your expectations would be met. But you already knew that when you posted. So why not simply acknowledge that one cannot reasonably defend an airline that takes money for a flight; cancels the flight; and, insists on keeping the money!!

I really don't know why they don't mandate the return of the money. I received my money back from Delta easily and as the US and EU it's mandatory. When they cancel the service incompletely (ie Wabush) it's a pretty "dick" move to give only a credit. They are going to have to rebook on PAL id they want to fly and lots of people don't have the extra cash to have a credit and then book more tickets, especially in this economic crisis. They can always use the credit if they really want to but the flights are just a small cost of a "fun" trip. Going to see family in Wabush where you're staying with family is a very different financially than going on a lholiday.

There's some day it's clear this forum forgets that the average median after tax income is approx. $61K and that 53% of the population loves paycheque to paycheque.

From what I've read I can't recall any airline out that willingly refunded customers money without being assured of, or actually receiving,  financial aid from their government.

And why should they?  We can't give John Q Public his money back because we'll probably go bankrupt if the Gov't doesn't at the very least give us the money we paid out beforehand to meet the operating requirements they (and in a sense John Q Public) stipulated for us to offer that service, and also compensate our shareholders for the losses they will sustain by taking away our ability to conduct business.  As it stands, would we even have enough to pay back all ticket holders or just a portion of them?  As far as I'm concerned - Ticketholders should go after the government to get their money back.  They are the ones that cancelled the flights.

If they don't like it then they and the government go after us in court.  Oh wait...

I’m not understanding 'average median'

Was that before or after the pandemic started and then was it before or after the US govt let it be known that Airline specific aid was coming ($25 Billion through Sept 30 and they're now talking of $32 Bill for the next installment Oct 01 to ??)

In the EU Lufthansa and Air France got Billions in government Aid as well.  Alitalia got aid recently.  The Govt of Portugal upped their stake in TAP to 72%.  I have lost track of how mch other countries are doing to support thie carriers.  The Canadian government has offered nothing remotely similar.

WestJet expands August schedule, updates July flying

From WESTJET, an Alberta Partnership

Schedule highlights airline’s continued service to 39 Canadian cities from coast-to-coast

Airline’s stringent health and safety measures ensure Canadians can travel safely to 48 destinations

westjet-max.jpg?w=1024

CALGARY, AB, July 13, 2020 /CNW/ – WestJet today released its updated August schedule featuring more than 200 daily flights to 48 destinations across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe. The schedule features service to 39 domestic airports and further highlights the airline’s commitment to ensuring air service and regional connectivity is available to Canadians from coast-to-coast.

The updated schedule is supported by the layered framework WestJet has built to ensure Canadians can continue to travel safely and responsibly through the airline’s Safety Above All hygiene program. The airline continues to provide flexibility in booking, change and cancellation policies for guests.

“With the many safeguards and procedures in place, we are certain Canadians can safely resume travel to destinations across our network,” said Arved von zur Muehlen, WestJet Chief Commercial Officer. “We continue to adapt our schedule to meet the needs of our guests and through our continued investments economies can begin to recover with the support of domestic tourism driven by air travel.”

Between July 15 through to September 4, 2020, WestJet will increase domestic frequencies and offer operations to 48 destinations including 39 in Canada, five in the U.S., two in Europe, one in the Caribbean, one in Mexico.

The airline will reintroduce non-stop Dreamliner service from Calgary to London (Gatwick) and Paris effective August 20, 2020 and will continue to serve five key transborder destinations including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York (LaGuardia) and Orlando. The airline will also offer service to Cancun, Mexico and will resume operations once-weekly to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Continued von zur Muehlen, “Despite these headwinds, we are committed to ensuring air travel remains affordable and accessible to Canadians from coast-to-coast during this difficult time. While an increase in flying is a positive sign, we are prudently monitoring our guests loads to ensure we are managing our airline and the health of our guests and crew responsibly.”

The August schedule reflects approximately a 10 per cent increase in flying from July, but a decrease of 75 per cent less flying from August 2019. It also includes select frequency reductions and temporary domestic route suspensions between stations across Canada due to continued border closures and provincial travel restrictions.

I wonder what the border closure extension will do to the US flying that was announced yesterday?

How do you not know that the "border closure" is referring to vehicle traffic? The "border" was never closed to air traffic.

My bad, quite right, to rephrase, will this encourage   WestJet, AC and US Carriers to add more transborder flights?  So for some reason you can not drive but it is OK to fly, that does not make any sense.

You can fly to the U.S.

Some Canadians may be surprised to learn they can still fly to the U.S. during the pandemic, even though the same rule doesn't apply on the other side of the border.

With the exception of immediate family, Canada currently restricts all foreigners — including Americans — from visiting the country for non-essential travel via any mode of transportation.

The U.S., however, only prohibits visitors from entering its country if they've been in Brazil, China, Iran, Ireland, the U.K. or 26 European countries in the Schengen Area 14 days prior.

During the closure of the Canada-U.S. land border to non-essential travel, Canadians can still fly to the U.S. (Nathan Denette/The Canadian Press)

Because of the bilateral agreement to close the Canada-U.S. land border, the only way Canadians can currently travel to the U.S. is by air. Saunders said dozens of his Canadian clients have flown to the U.S. with no complications during the land border closure.

"There's a back door wide open," said Saunders, whose office sits close to the Canadian border in Blaine, Wash. "They can just go in through the airport, and so that's what people are doing in droves."

Canadian air passengers also likely won't have to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival in the U.S. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that international travellers do so, but it's not a requirement unless specified by a particular region or state.

When Canadians return home, they must self-isolate for 14 days — as per federal rules

Westjet’s first 767 departs Calgary for the final time

In July, the Calgary-based airline announced it was retiring its fleet of Boeing 767s and on Wednesday, the first one flew what was likely its final flight as a passenger plane. Michael King reports.

I don't understand why they removed the name down the side, but left the tail in WJ colors.  If they were going to go that far, why not paint the tail black or something ??

ran out of paint?   Or perhaps realization that the tail insignia  would mean nothing to most non airline folks. ?
