WestJet: 29 March Update

NETWORK AND SCHEDULE CHANGES – WestJet announces schedule updates through May 4 and select seasonal route start dates

On Thursday, March 26 WestJet marked the last day of our planned transborder (U.S.) and international (Europe, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean) flying due to the COVID-19 crisis and the closing of international borders.

This is a difficult time as we temporarily say goodbye to these airports that have helped WestJet grow beyond our domestic borders and brought the pleasure and ease of worldwide travel to millions of Canadians.

We thank all of our airport partners, our contractors and our guests for their support and we look forward to resuming flights when we emerge from these turbulent times.

INTERNATIONAL AND TRANSBORDER

As the crisis continues, we have now updated our international and transborder schedule to temporarily remove flying through May 4, 2020. For our guests who have booked their travel after April 22 through May 4, we are proactively notifying you of your travel options.

Seasonal international route starts dates have been updated as follows:

  • Toronto – Barcelona starts June 5, 2020
  • Calgary – Rome starts June 4, 2020
  • Halifax – Manchester has been cancelled for summer 2020. WestJet will be reaccomodating guests on Halifax – London (Gatwick)

DOMESTIC

Our domestic schedule has also now been updated through May 4. Details remain the same as communicated earlier this week (see schedule below) with the exception of Grande Prairie. Due to newly reduced airport operating hours, we have reduced the daily Calgary – Grand Prairie schedule by two flights. WestJet will continue to fly once daily. In addition, Edmonton – Grande Prairie has been suspended until further notice.

Select seasonal domestic routes will start July 3, 2020 including:

  • Calgary – Whitehorse
  • Calgary – Dawson Creek
  • Calgary – Windsor
  • Toronto – Deer Lake
  • Halifax – Gander

For our guests who have booked their travel prior to July 3, we are proactively notifying you of your travel options.

CHANGES TO INFLIGHT SERVICE (Effective March 30)

WestJet is committed to providing our guests and WestJetters a safe travel and work environment. We have taken many extra precautions since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak and as of today have made additional changes to our inflight service.

On flights under 90 minutes:

  • We will no longer offer service on these flights in any cabin
  • Water and complimentary snacks will be available for emergency use only

On flights over 90 minutes:

  • We are suspending beverage service in all cabins

Economy

  • Guests will receive a complimentary snack, water bottle (small) and napkin on their seat prior to boarding for all occupied seats
  • Additional water will be available on request

Premium and Business

  • Guests will receive a premium snack box, napkin and water bottle (small) on their seat prior to boarding
  • Additional water will be available on request

ON WAGE SUBSIDY INQUIRIES

INTRODUCING SEAT DISTANCING ON OUR AIRCRAFT 

The safety of our guests and WestJetters has and continues to be our top priority. In these uncertain times, we continue to make important changes to our business and operations, for the safety and peace of mind of all.

Moving forward, from now until May 4, 2020, the middle seat on our Boeing 737s and 787 aircraft and every other seat on our Bombardier Q400 will be unavailable to book.

We’ve made this change to ensure our guests and crew can continue to fly safely and have more space to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

As we navigate our way through the COVID-19 crisis together, we are also encouraging our guests to follow these guidelines while boarding and on our aircraft:

  • Keeping 2 meters (6ft) of distance between the guest in front and behind when boarding 
  • Using the WestJet App to download boarding passes to display on phones
  • Using the disinfectant wipes provided during boarding to wipe down seats and table trays
  • Avoid lining up for washrooms

WestJet remains focused on the health and safety of our employees and guests as well as maintaining essential domestic service to the Canadian communities we serve. We hold ourselves to the highest standard to create an environment as clean as realistically possible and continue to expand and enhance our sanitization measures onboard to keep our guests and crew safe. Could be wrong but I don't think there is 6 feet between a body in the aisle seat and  a body in the window seat....how does eliminating the occupant of the centre seat fall in the "social distancing"  formula???

Never heard of feet to feet transfer? I can see that standing in a line....but not sitting down, both facing the same direction.

I would worry about the upper body especially the head and arms.....however...I am really not that concerned......I am not flying anywhere !!!!    Just cruising on the bateau...❤️

Kip, the separation that WestJet is attempting to do is the best that can be achieved unless of course the capacity of the aircraft is even greater reduced but of course I guess the public would accept that along with the increase in fares to cover at a min. the operating costs of the flight.  Want to bet they would ? ?  By the by some of the slots currently for sale by WestJet reflect 99.00 ow fares.

We know all  the airlines are bleeding but., in this case WJ is flaunting the self isolation  rules. Now if they have a government sanction, (pass),  that allows that ....well then, that's the way it goes and I don't have a problem with it.

 

PS..... I know WJ and AC have cut back on daily flights but the public should realize that they are damned lucky to get on an aircraft during this pandemic  and if it requires  a further reduction in flights  so that the airline doesn't "over" suffer.......so be it. 

PPS...I wonder who some "guest" would sue if they sat down beside, (empty seat), and the other guy in the row was asymptomatic  and the "guest" caught the virus ???

Kip, I know that AC is facing the same problem  have they published anything, did I miss it? At least WestJet has published what they are doing.

Talking to a friend at WestJet today he says the consensus in his group is when this is all said and done WestJet in 2021 with the exception of Encore and becoming Toronto focused is going to look a lot like WestJet in 2005.

Primarily domestic with only a handful of US, Mexican and Caribbean destinations, no Swoop, no Hawaii, no widebodies, no MAXes.

That may very well turn out to be true but it’s way too early to see where this will all shake out. When the dust has settled things will undoubtedly look different. There is already so much pent up demand for travel that when the all clear is signalled, and it will be, airlines are going to be hammered. 
 

This will also without doubt kill quite a few carriers but I think Canadian airlines, relative to a lot of other countries will probably do okay.

The future is so murky all of those may or may not pan out. 

Where we fly depends on what countries open their borders and where the Coronavirus is or isn't present. To suggest a geographic location as materializing or not has nothing to do with where the company wants to fly but where it's able to fly. Widebodies? The 787's are here and won't be going anywhere. The 767's are done. The max's present an interesting dilemma. I think WJ has soured on them and holding out for compensation is going to turn out to be a bad move that will result in massive compensation loss. We will shrink by necessity - returning leases, retiring 767's early. Swoop may be fallout but I think that's hope for people that just don't want it around. There is and will forever be a market for Swoop.

I wish I could be so bullish. We were already teetering on the edge with the amount of personal debt people were carrying. The bailout money sounds like a lot but in a few months it's going to look like we're trying to land a 1000 lb tuna with 2 lb test line.

Absolutely. Once a vaccine is developed people are going to travel. 

This event is going to change the world in a lot of ways. Travel won't be one of them for those that can afford it.

I think you're absolutely correct. A "friend" is hardly the figure of authority and all insight for a company, especially since most have a very tainted glass through which they view the world. As you say, Swoop is the new WestJet while it endeavors to be something better and bigger. The sooner people at WestJet get this and support it, the more successful they'll be.

I agree, but I also expect that fewer people will be able to afford to travel for a while given the economic pain this thing is inflicting.  I don't think we'll see demand recover to what it was pre-virus for quite some time.

100%

There was concern that once the MAX returned to service that it would flood the market and negatively impact margins. Now that airlines have shrunk their capacity up to 90% it's going to take a very long time for things to return to what we once considered "normal".

My sentiment on this changes daily (hourly). 

On the one hand, think about all the money people aren't, or possibly won't be, spending by staying home; recreation programs for the kids (summer camps, soccer league, hockey league), dining out, sporting events, daily driving and commuting expenses, consumer purchases, new cars.  The retail and entertainment industries, along with travel and tourism, will be decimated but I think for a lot of people who aren't employed in those industries it will be close to a wash between reductions in earnings and reductions in expenses.  Yes, I know there will be a huge number of unemployed and, as an airline employee, I will take a significant pay cut but, being a prudent person, I have gone through my budget and have been able to greatly reduce the outgoing.  This, along with tightly controlled discretionary spending could see my financial situation being about the same as previously up to maybe a 6-8 month timeframe and that's with no recovery at all.

IDK, maybe I'm just fooling myself but I do forsee a huge pent-up demand for travel.  The reasons why people travel will not have disappeared and after months of quarantine and lockdown could see travel of one of the things people choose to spend their discretionary money on first.

On the other hand, maybe it's the beginning of the next great depression and it takes a decade to recover with massive mortgage defaults, soup lines and tumbleweeds in the streets.

I was more reflecting on somebodies incredible pessimism than holding up an individual as an oracle.

The longer this goes on the more difficult the recovery will be and the greater the long-term impacts.

A whole lot of people "working from home" are just sitting on the couch waiting for an email to come in, nobody can continue paying them forever. If people can't get back to work soon the whole world is going to be in a death spiral.
