Calgary-based Westjet has hiked its bag fees for travellers purchasing basic fares to and from transatlantic destinations.

As of Feb. 12, basic fare customers booking travel on or after March 31 to London, Dublin, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Glasgow or Manchester will pay $60 for a first checked bag, up from $30.

A second checked bag will cost $90, up from $50.

Westjet customers who purchase a higher tier of fare are unaffected by the change.

Econoflex fares, for example, include one free checked bag, while Westjet Rewards members and holders of the Westjet RBC World Elite Mastercard also qualify for one or more free checked bags.

Westjet spokeswoman Morgan Bell said the airline believes its bag fees are competitive with the rest of the aviation industry.

She said the fee hike is based on factors such as “demand, costs and the competitive market.”

“While we understand that fees are not popular amongst travellers, the incorporation of fees has allowed us to unbundle our products and services so we can continue to provide our guests with more options and the lowest fares that they expect,” Bell said in an email.

Westjet first introduced checked bag fees in 2014.

Existing bag fees for domestic, transborder, Mexican and Caribbean routes remain unchanged.
