Here’s the reason so many people from Haiti are arriving, on infected flights, despite the federally mandated Covid testing :

Quote

Two days after requesting comment from Transport Canada, a spokesperson told the Toronto Sun that Haiti is exempt from the negative test requirement until Jan. 21 as it “does not yet have molecular testing for COVID-19 generally available.”

Inquires to federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra went unreturned, as were questions to the press secretary of Health Minister Patty Hajdu.

Emails to Air Transat, which offers twice-weekly flights between Montreal and Port-au-Prince, likewise went unanswered.

A Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) spokesperson said they consider three rows fore and aft of where a confirmed case sat to be “affected.”

“Based on the number of cases identified on arrival, and their dispersion across the aircraft, flights TS663 and TS665 are considered “all rows affected,” according to the agency.

Of course, no answer from the new Transport Minister or our Public Security Minister...but safety is our #1 priority.

And yes, to Boestars point about small numbers, why is Canada accepting infected passengers while we are basically locked down?

Air travel is simply not having any impact at this time.

I take comfort in knowing the government is in full agreement here.

The virus doesn't spread on aircraft, it doesn't spread on ships with central air handling. and it certainly doesn't spread during BLM protests... It must be bible studies and drive in services.

All of our experience with such things is anecdotal, unscientific and racist. FA's are fakers and sailors are malingerers. None of it is true.

Anyone who suggests otherwise needs to be deprogrammed, we have an app for that and if your neighbour isn't onboard he should be reported.

Now, about those potholes I reported last year, and the year before and the fuc%$#@ year before that. Get one thing right.... ONE THING, JUST ONE and maybe I will trust ya with more.

How the fu%$ does three planeloads of Covid have no impact? I feel as though I'm in some alternate reality in a foreign galaxy inhabited by gremlins who were fed after midnight and held underwater... no wonder I'm tired. The amount of Covid containment (self isolating) violations that I am personally familiar with borders on insanity.

The numbers of infected being found on aircraft are are miniscule compared to the numbers already in the community. the airlines are carrying so few passengers that the numbers just do not have a discernable impact.  The virus is here and stopping planes will not stop that.

Looks like they studied this properly, unlike hydroxychloroquine.  Only problem with it is that it is cheap and readily available.  No big profits to be made.

Quebec researchers say they have found an effective drug to fight COVID-19

MONTREAL -- A team of researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute believe they have found an effective weapon against COVID-19: colchicine, an oral tablet already known and used for other diseases.

For Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif, who led the study, this is a "major scientific discovery," he said. Colchicine is the first "effective oral drug to treat out-of-hospital patients."

"To be able to offer this, from Quebec, and for the planet, we are very happy," said Tardif.

The ColCorona study involved 4,159 patients whose diagnosis of COVID-19 had been confirmed by a nasopharyngeal test (PCR).

Analysis of the study found that colchicine resulted in reductions in hospitalizations by 25 per cent, the need for mechanical ventilation by 50 per cent, and deaths by 44 per cent.

"This is the first hope for patients who have COVID, who are worried and who hope that they will not have complications," said Tardif. Previously, "there were no tablets that could be taken by mouth and reduce the risks."

Tardif said he believes that prescribing the drug could help reduce congestion in hospitals quickly and reduce health-care costs in Quebec and elsewhere.

"Our study showed the effectiveness of treatment using colchicine to prevent the phenomenon of the major inflammatory storm and reduce complications related to COVID-19," he said.

As colchicine is a well-understood drug, it could be used very quickly to treat people with COVID-19, the researcher says.

"Colchicine is old as it is -- we've been treating gout with it for hundreds of years -- so it's available in pharmacies," Tardif said, speaking in French.

"So any doctor, tomorrow, who reads this can definitely decide to prescribe if he wants."

On Friday evening, Quebec Premier Francois Legault called the study "big news" on social networks.

In the spring, Legault said the Colcorona study was one of the largest studies in the world researching ways to fight the virus.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was deployed in Canada, the United States, Europe, South America and South Africa.

"It was a double-blind study, meaning neither the patient, nor the team that ran the study, including me, knew whether the patient was taking the placebo or the drug," explained Tardif.

"There was just one group, independent from us, which was aware."

He said the team is "very proud of the work accomplished -- it is a clinically convincing result," adding that he assembled a spectacular team from all over Quebec including microbiologists, intensive care specialists, statisticians, computer scientists and epidemiologists.

The Centre de Coordination des Essais Cliniques de Montréal (MHICC) of the Montreal Heart Institute coordinated the study.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 23, 2021.

Garneau won't rule out invoking Emergencies Act to limit pandemic travel

This should have been their first thought..... not a last resort. If you are going to do it, embrace the suck and do it right.

The question of "should you do it or not" is a separate debate. But, if you are going to, the notion of imposing a regional or jurisdictional lockdown without travel restrictions seems beyond foolish to me. Once the decision is made, you would have to be a raving liberal to think it would work without a ring of steel.

In truth, I hoped people would prove to be a bit more responsible.... but they aren't. If you flew to Florida and shipped your car, if your city was locked down and you drove to my (little) town to go Christmas  shopping (there are lots of other examples of noncompliance); then this Bud's for you. And well deserved it is.

Blame the feds, but pad the pocket.  Ontario's game plan.  And Alberta too...

Ontario sitting on billions in COVID-19 relief money for essential workers, health care, analysis shows

Ontario is sitting on $6.4 billion in unspent emergency COVID-19 funding as the pandemic rages, according to a new economic analysis, which shows that Ottawa is paying for the bulk of the relief effort.

Ontario is one of six provinces that have left billions on the table, moneys earmarked and urgently needed for health care, long-term care, housing and essential workers, states the study, released Tuesday by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

The other provinces are Alberta, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

“The heavy lifting so far was overwhelmingly federal, either through direct spending or new transfers to the provinces,” states the study, titled “Picking up the tab: A complete accounting of federal and provincial COVID-19 measures in 2020.”

Overall, it found that federal and provincial governments have earmarked $374 billion in direct COVID-19 emergency spending (excluding liquidity measures such as loans and unallocated funds). Of that, $343 billion or 92 per cent comes from Ottawa, and $31 billion or eight per cent comes from the provinces.

The analysis found that Ontario has budgeted $6.4 billion for COVID spending with no imminent plans for what to do with it. These moneys have been budgeted through the province’s Pandemic Fund, Support for People and Jobs Fund, an economic recovery fund and a health contingency fund.

“While unallocated contingency funds aren’t unique, no province has such large ones (as Ontario),” the report reads.

Among the report’s additional findings:

  • Alberta is getting $1,200 more federal support per person than any other province, yet is also leaving money on the table.

Interesting on its own merits but what really struck me here is the overall hypocrisy of it at all on a visceral level. On the one hand, we have a professional at gaming the system accusing amateurs who game the system of the sinful behaviour of gaming the system.

On the other hand, I’m willing to bet (but don't know) that these folks are long time liberal voters and campaign contributors.

Note to minister…. just try and imagine how I (and many others here) feel about your blatant suppression of any and all information surrounding the NS shooting. Maybe we should hold politicians to the same standard they demand of others when they say things like:

"These actions are a blatant display of disrespect and an exemplification of true privilege and entitlement"

Excellent movie thanks Seeker! I sent it to everyone I know. I have been trying my best to get people to see what is obviously happening right in front of them. I have to admit I find it very discouraging that most just want to stay firmly in their comfort zone pretending it isn’t happening even while their parents and in some cases even kids die alone with no loving contact. I am disgusted by the distain we obviously as a people have for our freedom and the sacrifices made by our forefathers in the recent past for us to have it. What’s about to happen I am unfortunately starting to feel is the just reward of our collective cowardice and indifference. Please keep me safe Mr Trudeau! Take away my freedom of assembly and travel, lock up my mom to die alone, take away my ability to make a living and support my family while funnelling us all into global corporations for our every purchase, inject us with experimental drugs whatever it takes.. just please please keep us safe from the scary virus!!

We now know that nursing home deaths were deliberately underreported by some 50%. I think we may need a thread entitled Their Headline/My Headline:

Their headline:

"Cuomo blames nursing home scandal on 'political attack' by Trump admin"

My headline:

UNFORGIVABLE: Governor shamelessly deflects blame for abusive polices that killed hundreds

CDC orders sweeping U.S. transportation mask mandate as COVID-19 rages

By David Shepardson

4 MIN READ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a sweeping order late Friday requiring the use of face masks on nearly all forms of public transportation Monday as the country continues to report thousands of daily COVID-19 deaths.

The order, which takes effect at 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday (0459 GMT Tuesday), requires face masks to be worn by all travelers on airplanes, ships, trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-shares and at transportation hubs like airports, bus or ferry terminals, train and subway stations and seaports.

President Joe Biden on Jan. 21 ordered government agencies to “immediately take action” to require masks in airports and on commercial aircraft, trains and public maritime vessels, including ferries, intercity bus services and all public transportation.

A made up story?

The story itself is real, I simply spun the headline....  it's actually about the Pentagon deciding not to offer vaccines in Guantanamo.

It was an attempt to make a point about unfair, partisan, over the top and divisive headlines, media bias if you will....obviously I did it poorly and created a distraction in the process, sorry.

"There'll be increased security contractors that would go and do more door-knocking to check on people who are in quarantine. So, I think that starts either today or tomorrow in Toronto and Montreal, broadening out to 35 cities

One has to wonder why INCREASE protocols when the numbers have been falling for over a week and are still trending down, At least in Ontario.  We are 50% of what we were a month ago.  You could say It's working so why change it.

Here's my solution, people under quarantine should hang a sign on each door that says something to the effect of:

House under quarantine IAW emergency regulations. Please leave the area immediately. In the interests of public safety and in compliance with Covid protocols, your presence will be ignored.

On Friday January 29th, the federal government announced increased restrictions on international travel in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Effective January 31, 2021, Canada’s airlines have agreed to suspend all flights to and from Mexico and Caribbean countries until April 30, 2021. These and other airlines will still continue to operate flights from the United States allowing Canadian travellers to return home. The Government of Canada has not set a date by which Canadians currently abroad must return back to Canada.

As soon as February 4th, all air travellers arriving in Canada, including Canadian citizens, will be required to reserve a room in a Government of Canada-approved hotel for three nights at their own cost (estimated at over $2,000 CAD), and take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival at their own cost. This test is in addition to the requirement for all travellers to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken 72 hours prior to their return flights to Canada.

For Canadian travellers returning home by vehicle, the federal government will introduce a 72-hour pre-arrival testing requirement (molecular test) with limited exceptions such as commercial truckers.

In addition, the Province of Ontario has announced that effective February 1, 2021, all international travellers at Toronto Pearson International Airport will be required to undergo a COVID-19 test upon arrival. Those travellers who refuse to undergo testing could face a fine of $750. The Ontario Government is also looking into additional testing measures at Pearson International Airport and land border crossings in the coming weeks.

While the Canadian Snowbird Association is supportive of point of entry testing for COVID-19 at all Canadian airports and land crossings, we are firmly opposed to the imminent mandatory hotel quarantine measure to be imposed by the federal government. The CSA believes that the current quarantine protocols should remain in place and travellers should be permitted to quarantine in their own homes.

Many of the details related to these new measures remain unknown. The CSA is monitoring these restrictions closely and will be providing members with updates as soon as new information and effective dates for these protocols are made available.

Sincerely,

The Canadian Snowbird Association

Had I just awakened from a Rip Van Winkle nap I might say something like "border controls don't work and thinking that they do is both racist and xenophobic."

Nothing like a little experience to change liberal perspectives.... it tends to focus their little  minds on workable solutions. It then allows them to ridicule those who point out their previous intransigence and make it seem like something they just thought of.

Can I have an A-women on that feminist Bro?

Who do you think you're fooling here?

The problem.  As usual.  Trudeau is allowing American carriers to operate .
