st27
Not related to the aircraft but more to piloting skills: Quote While the 300 passengers and crew onboard the Boeing 777-300 escaped with their lives even as high winds blew away some of plane's evacuation slides, a subsequent explosion that engulfed the aircraft in flames killed a firefighter on the ground. “The flight crew reliance on automation and lack of training in flying go-arounds from close to the runway surface ... significantly affected the flight crew performance in a critical flight situation which was different to that experienced by them during their simulated training flights,” the report said..... As pilots attempted to land the flight, they didn't realize that the plane touched down for some six seconds on the runway, the report found. Because of that, they didn't realize the plane's takeoff-go around switch had been turned off, investigators said. That switch automatically pushes up the throttle of the airplane, providing more power to head back into the sky again. Without that power, the plane tilted upward only to slam back down onto Runway 12L at the airport, the world's busiest for international travel. The plane skidded down the runway for 800 meters (half a mile) before coming to a halt. https://news.yahoo.com/report-emirates-pilots-unaware-engines-103218901.html
J.O.
I never understood the logic of a TOGA button on a modern FBW aircraft like the 777. This is another reason why I much prefer the Airbus FBW technology. For a go-around, you push the thrust levers all the way forward. It gives you everything you need in that moment - flight guidance and thrust. If the automation fails, you still have the thrust you need.
boestar
Is the function of the TOGA button not just to set the bugs to the appropriate spot for climbout and thrust settings? Kind of a throwback to earlier planes.

Correct. TOGA will command a thrust setting to achieve a climb rate of 2,000 fpm.
Guest
WORLD NEWS FEBRUARY 24, 2020 / 12:14 PM / UPDATED 34 MINUTES AGO Turkey arrests captain of crashed Pegasus flight in Istanbul: Anadolu 1 MIN READ ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish authorities have arrested the captain of a Pegasus Airlines plane that skidded off the runway and killed three people at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport this month, state-run Anadolu news agency said on Monday. The Pegasus plane flying into Istanbul from the western coastal province of Izmir slipped off the end of the wet runway and broke into three pieces after what officials said was a drop of 30 to 40 meters (98 to 131 ft). The two pilots of the plane, a Boeing 737-86J, were each questioned following the crash, and Anadolu said on Monday that one of them, captain Mahmut Arslan, had been arrested. It did not give further details. Reporting by Tuvan Gumrukcu; Editing by Hugh Lawson
