CanadaEH
There's video from a distance of the crash. For some reason can't post it here... just shows up as a blank post.
CanadaEH
Apparently crash 4 min after departure. I'm reading Twitter for news so cannot verify this is true. Neither can I verify the ridiculous speculation about what happened. What I do know is that it's suspect for a semi-official news agency to declare the plane crash due to technical difficulties incredibly premature. Guest
Jan. 7, 2020 11:28 pm ETA Ukraine International Airlines plane crashed in Iran’s capital on Wednesday with at least 170 passengers and crew members on board, according to Iranian state television. The Boeing 737 single-aisle jet crashed after taking off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport en route to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, state news said.A spokesperson for Ukraine International Airlines couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. An Iranian air accident investigation team was headed to the crash, the spokesman for Iran’s air regulator told state television. A report on casualties would come later, the spokesman said. The crash came as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a series of strikes against two bases with U.S. troops in Iraq, which the Iranian force said were retribution for the U.S. killing of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.Over the past year, Boeing Co. has suffered a series of technical failures with its newer-version 737 MAX aircraft. The Ukrainian 737 is an earlier model and doesn’t have the flight-control feature that was implicated in crashes last year and led to Boeing grounding the MAX fleet globally. The Wall Street Journal couldn’t independently verify what caused the crash. Iranian media said it was due to a technical fault without explaining how they reached that conclusion. Determining the likely cause of a crash typically can take days or months.Write to Rory Jones at rory.jones@wsj*

QFE
Why do we have 63 Canadian civilians in Iran while they are launching missiles at a US military base that contains Canadian soldiers? Not to worry - our fearless bearded leader says he will have a thorough investigation!
Jaydee
My guess is they we’re evacuating as per advisement of external affairs. Watched a cell phone video earlier showing what looked like possible missiles being fired at the Airplane as it climbed out. Speculation has Iranian leadership claiming victory and backing off already. If nothing else it looks good to the Iranians.

Any of us would do the same in similar circumstances. Oh, and let's try to be adults, hard as it might be.
Don Hudson
There are no signs of a missile in the video but there are two bright spots falling away, trailing the aircraft which are likely parts of the structure. Aircraft viewed in darkness this far away are barely distinguishable except for the nav & anti-collision lights. Here, the image is large and very bright, indicating what is likely a very significant in-flight fire. The video shows a large explosion about 2 to 3 seconds prior to impact: In the link to the video vanishing point posted there appears to be an exit-hole in the turbine section. Here are two other images: The wreckage is widely distributed without impact craters likely indicating pre-impact break-up and showing signs of in-flight fire: There are single "entry" holes as seen above, but so far there does not appear to be a pattern of small entry holes as seen with MH17. Guest
Of interest to me, is why anyone would have been filming this particular take off , late at night.
rudder
06:15 am. Start of the day for many. Fireball in the night sky. Not so far fetched to pull out the phone and record the sight. It will be a critical piece of evidence in the search for answers.

The video I saw cut in after the engine or fuselage was a fireball in the night sky - not surprised that someone with a cellphone camera would have recorded that. Now, my question - what were the weather conditions, specifically temperature at takeoff. The low tonight in Tehran is 0 centigrade, and a 6:30 am takeoff following a one hour delay might have put it at precisely the coldest time of night. With dew on the wing possible, wouldn't/shouldn't the plane have had to be de-iced?

There are a lot of Iranian Canadians and Iranian students studying in Canada. One of the dead was an engineer at Pratt & Whitney in Longueuil who was visiting family over the Christmas-New Year break. Several were PhD students or profs. There was a wedding party, bride, groom and some of the wedding guests; they had been in Iran for the wedding. So sad, as these tragedies always are. Don Hudson
Understand both recorders have been recovered. The Iranian government is responsible for the investigation. The manufacturer and the countries directly affected have the right to be involved in the investigation.
