My guess is that Jazz will be a significant source of experienced E-jet pilots.

I have a hard time believing that.  I don’t know the pay structure at either airline, but i just can’t see guys jumping ship, unless it’s FOs taking the left seat over there

Time will tell I guess….

Porter Airlines turns 15 Français

NEWS PROVIDED BY

Porter Airlines

Oct 22, 2021, 10:00 ET

TORONTO, Oct. 22, 2021 /CNW/ - Tomorrow, October 23, marks 15 years since Porter Airlines first introduced its refined flying experience to all travellers.

Headquartered at Billy Bishop Airport in downtown Toronto, Porter emphasizes speed, convenience and service, including complimentary wine and beer served in glassware for all passengers. Porter has elevated the flying experience, appealing to business and leisure flyers alike, while providing competitive and affordable travel options.

In 2020, Porter temporarily suspended operations due to COVID-19 and resumed flights on September 8, 2021. Now flying to all of its year-round destinations, Porter is focused on restoring the airline's high-frequency service as the industry continues to recover. Today, approximately 88% of team members have been recalled to work.

"The pandemic reminds us of Porter's entrepreneurial beginnings 15 years ago and the challenges associated with building a brand from scratch," said Michael Deluce, president and CEO, Porter Airlines. "The difference today is that we have a loyal customer base and an experienced team. It will take time to get back to where we were two years ago, but we're ready to do this work. I want to recognize our entire team for persevering through the most difficult of circumstances, while contributing to a culture that values respect, passion and innovation. This is the strong foundation we will build on as Porter comes back better than ever."

In July, Porter announced it is extending its award-winning service to destinations throughout North America with the introduction of up to 80 state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient Embraer E195-E2 aircraft into its fleet. The planes have transcontinental range and will enter into service starting in the second half of 2022, focusing on introducing routes from Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax and Toronto Pearson International Airport. This investment enhances competition, elevates passenger service levels and creates as many as 6,000 new jobs based on 80 aircraft deliveries.

Porter will also continue serving a network of regional markets from its existing hub at Billy Bishop Airport.

Porter has now secured lease agreements with five leasing companies for a total of 26 E195-E2s. These aircraft are part of Porter’s original order for 30 E195-E2s. Aircraft deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2022.

“There is continuing strong interest in the E195-E2 from the leasing community, with TrueNoord and Merx/Apollo being the latest partners to join our strong lessor group,” said Jeffrey Brown, executive vice president and CFO, Porter. “We anticipate being able to complete transactions for the remaining aircraft in our initial order and look forward to them entering service.”

They are blending this experience with great enthusiasm, innovation and creativity to build a successful business around the new E195-E2. Air Transat and Porter Airlines launch codeshare agreement Français

NEWS PROVIDED BY

Transat A.T. Inc.

Oct 18, 2022, 10:00 ET

MONTREAL and TORONTO, Oct. 18, 2022 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, Air Transat and Porter Airlines, two of Canada's most prominent airlines, have launched a new bilateral codeshare. The agreement is now activated between Porter Airlines' domestic flights to and from Halifax (YHZ) and Toronto City (YTZ), and select Air Transat flights to and from Montreal (YUL).

"We are delighted that our codeshare agreement with Porter Airlines is taking off. Our respective networks are highly complementary, with Porter serving Toronto and Halifax, and Air Transat serving some 15 countries," said Michèle Barre, Air Transat's Vice President, Network, Revenue Management and Pricing. This will provide both our passengers with an expanded, yet seamless experience, and is perfectly in line with Air Transat's strategy initiated earlier this year to develop our network through alliances."

"We have found an ideal partner in Air Transat to launch Porter's first codeshare agreement," said Kevin Jackson, Porter Airlines' Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. "Connecting passengers in two of our most important markets, Toronto and Halifax, with Air Transat's European and North American network is a great benefit. This is just the beginning, as we intend to expand Porter's own network to create many more travel opportunities between our two airlines."

Air Transat is now using its "TS" code on flights operated by Porter Airlines between Toronto's Billy Bishop and Montreal as well as between Halifax and Montreal. Travellers are then able to easily connect to or from a destination served by Air Transat via Montreal. This winter, connections to and from Paris, London and Lisbon are available, as well as domestic and several South destinations. Additional connection to and from the United States will be rolled out later this year.

In an upcoming phase, Porter Airlines will also use its "PD" code on select flights operated by Air Transat between Montreal and its destinations in Europe, the United States and Canada, pending receiving the required regulatory approvals.

Codesharing expands the range of routes and destinations for travellers, including the possibility of combining flights from both carriers on a single ticket, plus baggage check-in to the final destination. Passengers are also protected in the event of a flight delay or cancellation.

Codeshare flights are currently available for bookings made via Air Transat. Flights may be booked for departures as of November 2, 2022.

Porter Airlines ordered to pay $130-million to operator of Toronto’s island airport terminal for non-payment of fees during pandemic

DPSZIBYU3VE5FFELEWKOQ2J7EU.JPG

Wed Oct 26, 2022 - The Globe and Mail
Eric Atkins - Transportation Reporter

Quote

'The judge wrote that Porter and Porter Aircraft Leasing did not show they were unable to pay the terminal fees. He pointed to Porter Aircraft Leasing’s move to commit to purchasing 30 Embraer aircraft in the pandemic, a “significant capital expenditure."

A judge has ordered Porter Airlines and a related leasing company to pay $130-million in damages to the owner of the passenger terminal at Toronto’s island airport, Nieuport Aviation Infrastructures Partners LP, for refusing to pay fees during and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

The ruling from Justice Peter Cavanagh of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice comes two years after Porter and Nieuport sued each other over the airline’s move to relinquish airplane slots and withhold gate fees. Porter, the main airline at the airport near downtown Toronto, said the pandemic triggered a force majeure, or major event, that contractually allowed it to cease payments. Nieuport disagreed, and countersued.

In a decision dated Oct. 19, Justice Cavanagh sided with Nieuport, awarding breach-of-contract damages.

“Porter is not entitled to relief in relation to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic from its obligation under the licence agreement to pay terminal fees to Nieuport as they would otherwise be determined,” he wrote.

In a 97-page ruling, the judge wrote that Porter and Porter Aircraft Leasing did not show they were unable to pay the terminal fees. He pointed to Porter Aircraft Leasing’s move to commit to purchasing 30 Embraer aircraft in the pandemic, a “significant capital expenditure.”

“Porter does not assert that its financial circumstances were such that it could not pay the terminal fees. Porter paid other creditors during its suspension of services,” Justice Cavanagh wrote, adding that even if he accepted Porter was unable to pay the fees, he would still reject the argument it was contractually entitled to halt payments.

The dispute began in 2018, when Porter notified Nieuport it planned to stop using unprofitable slots beginning in 2020, a move that would save $12-million a year. Nieuport refused to agree, a decision it took after being unable to find another buyer for the slots, Porter alleged.

Porter’s flights were suspended between March, 2020, and September, 2021. PortsToronto, the government agency that owns the airport, said it supported Porter’s move, according to court submissions, and the Canada Border Services Agency suspended its operations at the airport during this time.

The court heard evidence from Darin Lee, an economist who specializes in the airline industry, who described the pandemic’s effects on air travel as a devastating “black swan” event.

PortsToronto continued to charge rent to Nieuport during the pandemic, even though the airport was largely unused.

Nieuport argued in court that Porter was able to continue paying fees, and pointed to the company’s $135-million emergency loan from a federal government agency.

“Porter may well have acted in a commercially reasonable way by suspending its operations,” the judge wrote. “However, Porter has not shown that, for this reason, it was ‘restricted’ in fulfilling its payment obligation.”

Nieuport, controlled by J.P. Morgan Asset Management Inc. of New York, bought the island airport terminal from Porter in 2015 for more than $700-million. Prepandemic, Porter accounted for 85 per cent of the traffic at the airport and was Nieuport’s biggest source of revenue.

Brad Cicero, a Porter spokesman, said the airline is “disappointed” by the decision. “We are considering a response and next steps in the proceedings, including our intention to [seek permission to] appeal,” he said in an e-mail. “Porter Airlines was prepared to move ahead based on any outcome and this has no effect on daily operations or plans to grow the business.”

“As the owner and operator of the passenger terminal at Billy Bishop Airport, Nieuport Aviation sees strong demand for this downtown Toronto airport and always believed that the contractual obligations in our agreements would be upheld,” Nieuport said in an e-mail. “Our focus remains on post-pandemic recovery and working with all carriers to deliver exceptional services to our three million customers per year.”

However, the judge wrote that the sale of the terminal to Nieuport came with a five-year agreement Porter would pay for 172 slots a day, and Nieuport disagreed the number could vary daily.

A terminal slot, which is the right to take off or land in a specified time period, costs about $950, plus $85 for ground handling of the aircraft, according to a Nieuport court filing.

Porter Aviation Holdings Inc., OIAA investing over $65 million at Ottawa International Airport

Porter building two hangars for new aircraft maintenance base 200 full-time, permanent local jobs being created

OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 1, 2022 /CNW/ – Porter Aviation Holdings Inc., parent company of Porter Airlines, and the Ottawa International Airport Authority (OIAA) are investing over $65 million dollars in YOW’s future.

Porter is in the process of building two aircraft hangars, over approximately 150,000 sq. ft., to maintain its growing fleet, featuring the new Embraer E195-E2 and existing De Havilland Dash 8-400. OIAA is constructing a new taxiway and related infrastructure to support the hangar development, as well as future opportunities in this section of the airport.

The hangars are being built in two phases: phase one is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023, and phase two in the first quarter of 2024. YOW will be a primary maintenance base for the E195-E2, with Porter hiring 200 local team members, including 160 Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs). Other positions include shop technicians, stores clerks and administrative support. These represent highly-skilled roles that will be based in the city. Additionally, 150 construction jobs will be supported during the building process.

“Ottawa has been a critical location for Porter throughout our history and the multi-million dollar facilities we’re building to maintain aircraft here is only the latest example of our desire to meaningfully invest in Canada’s Capital Region,” said Michael Deluce, president and CEO, Porter Airlines. “We anticipate our presence in Ottawa will grow in the coming years, supported by the maintenance base and future aircraft deliveries that give us the ability to consider new routes.”

The airline has up to 100 E195-E2s on order, including 50 firm commitments and 50 purchase rights. The current Dash 8-400 fleet includes 29 aircraft.

OIAA is currently constructing Taxiway Romeo in the airport’s north field area. The $15 million taxiway represents the first airside expansion project in the AAIO’s 20-year history. It will accommodate Porter’s hangar development plans, as well as federal government needs, and possibly other commercial aviation-related development.

“YOW was Porter’s first destination when they launched in 2006. We believe it’s very fitting that YOW is an important part of their expansion plans and their future, and look forward to the benefits that come with such an extensive maintenance operation,” said Mark Laroche, OIAA President and CEO. “We are particularly pleased that sustainability factors so prominently in Porter’s plans, which fits perfectly with YOW’s ambitious commitment to net-zero operations (Scope 1 and 2 GHGs) by 2040 or sooner.”

In addition to daily line maintenance performing scheduled tasks on the E195-E2 and Dash 8-400, the Ottawa facility will have the following capabilities:

  • Indoor parking for up to eight aircraft
  • Structures shop for repairs and modifications of metal and composite aircraft parts
  • Component repair shop to repair and overhaul cabin equipment
  • Wheel shop to repair and overhaul main and nose wheels
  • Battery shop to repair and overhaul aircraft main and emergency batteries

Sustainability
The hangars are designed and will be built with sustainability in mind, including the following features:

  • A predominantly electric fleet of vehicles that will be used for towing and servicing aircraft, as well as ground support.
  • Design criteria that exceeds current energy efficiency standards, including for insulation, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and electrical power systems.
  • The hangars are clad in Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs).
    • Superior to the standard metal siding usually found on aircraft hangars.
    • The anticipated lifespan is greater than 60 years.
    • Constructed with approximately 35% recycled steel and, at end of life, can in turn be recycled.
    • Constructed from materials that have a low embodied carbon footprint – 28% lower than conventional tilt-up assemblies.
  • The structure spans 85.6 m (280 ft.). This substantial clear span has been achieved using prefabricated trusses. The steel tonnage to span ratio is approximately 30% less than conventional rolled steel section beams.
  • Fire protection involves dual systems. In addition to a conventional sprinkler system, the aircraft parking and maintenance areas are equipped with an instantaneous foam deluge system. In the event of a fire, the multi-layers of fire suppression do not rely on a conventional single source of water supply. The city hydrant system is fully supplemented by an onsite underground water storage tank containing approximately 1.2 million litres of water.
  • Stormwater management has become an important factor in both commercial and industrial developments. Instead of rain/stormwater flowing directly to and overstressing existing city mains, two 173,000-litre underground tanks are being installed at the Porter hangars to capture excess.

Porter’s imminent introduction of the E195-E2 to its fleet provides the ability to operate throughout North America, including to the west coast, southern U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. The aircraft will initially be deployed from Toronto Pearson International Airport, with Ottawa, Halifax and Montreal seeing new service with the E195-E2 over time. The first of up to 100 new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered to Porter by the end of 2022, and initial routes will be announced leading up to the first aircraft deliveries.

The hangars are designed by Scott Associates Architects, with PCL Construction acting as Construction Manager, together with Span Construction & Engineering.

Porter Airlines to fly out of Pearson to Vancouver, plus Ottawa and Montreal

Toronto-based airline has ordered 50 new Embraer long-range jets

Porter Airlines has announced an aggressive expansion plan, one that will see the Toronto-based regional airline start flying new routes out of Canada's biggest airport, to destinations farther away than the airline has ever flown before.

The airline, whose base of operations is at Billy Bishop Airport on Toronto Island, has announced new routes flying out of the city's Pearson airport.

For the first time ever, Porter will offer flights from Toronto to Vancouver — the longest route the airline has offered in its 16-year history. The route has been made possible because of the airline's recent acquisition of 50 Embraer E195-E2 jets.

Flights are slated to begin in February and round-trip fares will start at $248, the airline said in a statement.

In addition to Vancouver, Porter is also adding two new routes out of Pearson to Ottawa and Montreal, also on the Embraer jets. While Porter's traditional fleet of turboprops have a complimentary snack service, the new jets and routes will come with familiar air-travel perks, like Wi-FI and a meal service.

The flights out of Pearson to Ottawa and Montreal will start at $225, with all fees and taxes included, the airline said.

"Porter's introduction of the E195-E2 provides the ability to operate throughout North America, including the West Coast, better positioning us to serve the needs of many more business and leisure passengers," Porter CEO Michael Deluce said in a statement.

Previous expansion plans

Porter had previously tried to scale up from a small regional airline by ordering several dozen CSeries jets from Bombardier, which would have allowed it to offer long-range flights to places as far away as western Europe and the Caribbean.

But those plans were scuppered when various levels of government refused to allow the runway at the downtown Toronto Island airport to be expanded to handle the larger jets.

Embraer E195-E2 and E190-E2 Receives Type Certification in Canada

15 November 2022

Embraer’s E2 family of commercial jets, the E195-E2 and E190-E2, has received Type Certification from Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA), following certification from ANAC (Brazil), the FAA (USA), and EASA (Europe) in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

The delivery of the first of fifty E195-E2 ordered by Toronto based Porter Airlines, which will also be the first E195-E2 to operate in North America, will take place at Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil, in the coming days.

Porter Airlines has orders with Embraer for up to 100 E195-E2 aircraft; 50 firm commitments and 50 purchase rights. In 2021 Porter ordered 30 Embraer E195-E2 jets, with purchase rights for a further 50 aircraft, worth US$5.82 billion at list price, with all options exercised. A firm order for a further 20 aircraft followed in 2022, valued at US$1.56 billion.

The world’s most efficient family of single-aisle aircraft is shaping the regional market with its sustainable technologies, superior cabin comfort, excellent economics and optimal range. As operators look to the future, renewing ageing fleets and expanding networks, the E2 will be at the heart of this transformation.

The E195-E2 is the most environmentally friendly aircraft in its class, with a 25% lower fuel burn than the previous generation aircraft, with E190-E2 achieving 17% lower emissions. Both aircraft have the lowest levels of external noise, and the longest maintenance intervals in the single-aisle jet category – with 10,000 flight hours for basic checks and no calendar limit for typical E-Jet operations. This means an additional 15 days of aircraft utilization over a period of ten years compared to current generation E-Jets.

The E190-E2’s take-off performance is particularly notable, the aircraft’s range from airports with hot-and-high conditions, such as Denver and Mexico City, increases by 600nm compared to current-generation aircraft.
