"Whether they have Italian roots or are dreaming of a bucket list destination, western Canadians have never had convenient, non-stop access to the Eternal City," said Ed Sims, WestJet President and CEO. "WestJet's continued international expansion from our home in Calgary reinforces our commitment to investing in the city as an international aviation hub. With travel via Dreamliner and an elapsed travel time as opposed to connecting through eastern hubs, this flight positions us as a preferable transatlantic option for a wonderful summer holiday in beautiful and historic Rome."

"We are extremely proud to welcome WestJet to Rome Fiumicino Airport as its new destination in Europe and first in Italy," said Fausto Palombelli, Chief Commercial Officer of Aeroporti di Roma. "Rome Fiumicino, the first airport in Europe for passenger satisfaction, is constantly developing as the main Italian hub and preferred gateway to the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe. The new WestJet flight is the answer to an increasing demand between Canada and Italy, that has been growing beyond the capacity introduced into the market. Flying non-stop to Calgary will allow Italian customers to reach and discover a destination never served before and provide preferential access to central and western Canada and the U.S."

"Our guests now have the option to avoid a long day of travel including connections, with WestJet's new non-stop flight from Calgary to Rome," said Bob Sartor, President & CEO, The Calgary Airport Authority. "WestJet is our airport's largest carrier and our strategic partner. We congratulate them on this new Dreamliner route to Italy."

WestJet seasonal service between Rome's Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino (FCO) and Calgary International Airport (YYC) will operate three-times weekly in peak season. Flights are timed for convenient connections across WestJet's network in North America, including to and from Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The airline today also announced it is adding more than 300 Dreamliner departures, an increase of more than 52 per cent over 2019, to key transatlantic Dreamliner routes out of Calgary including:

  • Calgary-London (Gatwick) six-times weekly starting April 4, 2020, increases to daily service April 14, 2020.
  • Calgary-Paris starting March 12, three-times weekly, increases to four-times weekly April 6, and to six times weekly on June 2, 2020. This is an additional two weekly flights over summer 2019.
  • Calgary-Dublin resumes twice-weekly service on May 3, 2020 and increases to three-times weekly flights on May 30, 2020.

WestJet's transatlantic Dreamliner flights, based out of Calgary, are uniquely and conveniently timed in the interest of Albertans and western Canadians with late-day departures and daytime arrivals to suit guests travelling transatlantic.

"After the success we had on our Dreamliner routes out of Calgary in summer 2019, we have added 200,000 more seats and lengthened the operating dates on our seasonal routes," continued Sims. "The reception of these flights reinforces that we are providing services that were long overlooked for travellers from the west. Our investments in Alberta are driving economic growth, boosting our visitor economy, enabling businesses and communities to grow and unlock their potential while connecting families and friends."

My bad on the previous attempt at a post.

Was gonna mention, I was a little surprised at the choice of FCO. Pure leisure destination.

Would have thought something more inline with the big push WJ has been going with for the business traveller.

AMS for example.

No slots in AMS, plus future TALT JV partner already serves AMSYYC.

FCO could also be a JV partner hub if both Alitalia and WestJet are part of it.

Albertans can now get away to three great destinations in Mexico, including Cancún and Mazatlán.

CALGARY, Oct. 31, 2019 /CNW/ - Today, Swoop, Canada's ultra-low-fare airline and subsidiary of WestJet Airlines Inc., continues to expand its North American service with the introduction of two new routes from Edmonton International Airport (YEG); the first to Cancún International Airport (CUN) departing today, followed by the inaugural flight to Mazatlán International Airport (MZT) departing on November 2.

The new routes expand Swoop's Edmonton to Mexico service, having launched a Puerto Vallarta (PVR) service earlier this month. With Swoop's unbundled airfare, services and amenities allowing for a customized travel experience, more Canadians have the option to escape the snow this winter at an accessible price.

"We are always striving to provide our travellers with more options for their getaways. Our unbundled model allows us to do that at a price that works for them," said Steven Greenway, President, Swoop. "We are thrilled to make international travel more accessible for Canadians by offering three Mexican destinations for Albertans to enjoy."

As a testament to Swoop's success in growing its international network, the airline has been recognized as a key partner by the Mazatlán tourism community. Earlier this week, Swoop was awarded the Golden Deer Award as Canadian Airline of the Year during the 25th Gran Fiesta de Amigos de Mazatlán event.

The Cancún and Mazatlán routes launch just ahead of the holiday season, in anticipation of travellers heading to warmer climates. Swoop's growing network now connects travellers in 17 domestic, transborder and international destinations. The airline's route map is constantly expanding, bringing ultra-low fares to all.

Swoop's first direct flight to Cancún departed this morning at 7 a.m. MDT, starting a weekly service on Thursdays. Non-stop Edmonton to Mazatlán service starts November 2 at 7:30 a.m. MDT with a weekly service on Saturdays and adding a Tuesday service as of December 17.

Flights are now available for booking through to April 25, 2020.

Did not know about the new ad , and I must admit I found it rather   MOO ving. ?   However following is a case where WestJet is treating animals like people and I say good for them.

WestJet steps forward to solve bamboo shortage for Calgary Zoo’s picky pandas

By The Canadian Press

CALGARY—A culinary crisis has been avoided at the Calgary Zoo which was facing a bamboo shortage for its four giant pandas.

The pandas, which staff admit are picky eaters, munch on about 1,200 kilograms of bamboo a week.

The zoo was left scrambling when Chinese airline Hainan announced it was discontinuing direct flights from China to Calgary at the end of October.

WestJet stepped forward and is now flying fresh bamboo on its cargo planes twice weekly from Toronto to Calgary.

The zoo says Hainan still flies to Toronto and hands off the panda food to WestJet.

The first shipment arrived on Oct. 26.

The Calgary Zoo says it began searching for a solution as soon as it heard about Hainan’s plans.

“WestJet heard about the bamboo challenges and ... the WestJet cargo team offer(ed) to fly the bamboo shipments from Toronto to Calgary twice weekly,” the zoo said in a news release.

Or one could argue they’re helping the zoo maintain an outdated tradition of keeping wild animals captive for the viewing pleasure of humans.

Or they could say, just like the Calgary Zoo, they are helping with the survival of animal species.

The Start-up Airline of the Year is awarded annually to an innovative airline with the greatest impact on the aviation industry. Swoop's first flight took off in June 2018 and it has already experienced large success in the Canadian marketplace, currently servicing 37 markets with 17 destinations. As Canada's leading domestic and transborder ultra-low-cost carrier, Swoop's unbundled model provides travellers with low fares, services and amenities making travel more accessible for Canadians.

"Just 18 months ago, Swoop entered the marketplace to fulfill a need in the Canadian travel industry and we are proud to already be recognized globally for our success," said Greenway. "We are continually looking for ways to reach new markets and be different in our industry. This award is a testament to the hard work we are putting towards differentiating ourselves and our operations on a global scale."

"Swoop has risen to the challenge of maintaining a separate identity and strategy from its parent company," said CAPA Chairman, Emeritus Peter Harbison. "It is stimulating traffic in Canada's market and adapting quickly to successfully execute the ultra-low-cost carrier model."

In its 16th year, the CAPA Aviation Awards for Excellence reward airlines and airports that are not only financially successful but have also provided industry leadership in adjusting to a new environment. WestJet CEO on Wexit: 'I won't tolerate that kind of language'

WestJet CEO Ed Sims said talk of Alberta separating from Canada runs counter to the economic interests of both the Calgary-based airline he leads and the province as a whole

December 8, 2019 - Financial Post
Amanda Stephenson, Calgary Herald

WestJet CEO Ed Sims has taken aim at the Wexit movement, saying talk of Alberta separating from Canada runs counter to the economic interests of both the Calgary-based airline he leads and the province as a whole.

“I won’t tolerate that kind of language,” Sims said, when asked in an interview for his thoughts on Wexit, the movement that promotes an independent Alberta and that has come into the spotlight in the aftermath of the recent federal election.

“Having come from the U.K., I’ve seen three years of total economic paralysis and stagnation caused by Brexit,” Sims added. “I don’t envy our (U.K.) colleagues trying to deal with attracting people to a U.K. that feels very divided. And there’s no reason for Alberta to feel divided from the rest of Canada.”

While Sims said he doesn’t for a second underestimate the difficulties the Alberta economy has faced in the last year — pointing to continued pipeline delays, recent layoffs at Husky Energy and Encana Corp.’s decision to move its corporate headquarters to the U.S. as examples — he said most economists are forecasting some degree of economic improvement in 2020.

And he pointed out WestJet itself is confident enough in Alberta and its future that it chose Calgary to be the hub for its international Dreamliner service, launched earlier this year. In addition, three-quarters of WestJet’s total national capacity growth from 2015-2019 (the downturn years) has taken place in Calgary.

Sims said he is increasingly concerned that talk of Western alienation and economic stagnation is reverberating beyond Alberta’s borders and creating the impression that this province is not an attractive place to invest.

“If we are not careful we will start using the language of a depression rather than a recession,” he said. “I worry because we (WestJet) are a Canadian operation headquartered here.”

Sims is not the first in recent days to express concerns about Wexit and the impact it is having on Alberta’s reputation as an investment destination. Last week, Mary Moran — CEO of Calgary Economic Development — said in a speech at a business forum in Lake Louise that the rise of separatist sentiment in Alberta cost Calgary an opportunity to attract a major technology head office.

The city was high on the unnamed firm’s shortlist of potential hosts until alarms were raised over Wexit, she said in an interview after the speech.

Sims said he has shared his concerns with municipal governments as well as the provincial government, and warned that overly negative talk could also damage Alberta’s reputation as a tourist destination.

“We need to start adapting a more ‘whole-of-Canada’ voice than a provincial voice,” Sims said. “I am more than happy to take a lead role … in saying ‘there is no wall, and there will be no wall around Alberta.’ ”

Swoop

Dec 10, 2019, 09:00 ETTravellers can now visit Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos at an accessible price

CALGARY and WINNIPEG, Dec. 10, 2019 /CNW/ - Today, Swoop, Canada's ultra-low-fare airline and subsidiary of WestJet Airlines Ltd., launches its inaugural flight from Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG) to Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) departing at 8:45 a.m. CST.

This is Swoop's second route from Winnipeg to Mexico, offering travellers the choice to vacation on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos from Manitoba's capital. Having just recently launched a series of new routes from YWG, including Fort Lauderdale, Tampa Bay and Las Vegas, Winnipeggers can enjoy a total of nine destinations through Swoop's year-round and seasonal operations.

"Our route map is constantly expanding, working towards our mission of making travel more affordable, easy and accessible for all," said Steven Greenway, President, Swoop. "We are continuing to grow our Winnipeg network, providing more options for Canadians to escape Winter'peg and head to warmer destinations."

Direct flights from Winnipeg to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta are providing more Canadians the opportunity to head south of the border this winter. Swoop prides itself on its low price-point because of its unbundled model, with a base fare that includes only a seat, giving travellers the power to add the things they want, and nothing they don't.

"Our partnership with Swoop continues to grow, providing our community more direct, low-cost travel options to visit and experience sought-after destinations across North America," said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. "These additional routes are helping further strengthen Winnipeg's connection to the world by opening the door for Winnipeg Richardson International Airport to welcome more travellers to Winnipeg. Swoop continues to be a valuable partner who recognizes Winnipeg's potential."

"We welcome Swoop's new flight from Winnipeg as this will provide direct access to Puerto Vallarta's diverse offering this winter," said Javier Aranda, Director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board. "Puerto Vallarta will be the land of celebrations in the upcoming months as we start the holiday season with the Virgen of Guadalupe pilgrimages, Christmas, Hanukah, New Years and many other cultural events. We invite all our visitors to join in the celebrations and experience Puerto Vallarta."

"We are thrilled to collaborate with Swoop in the launch of a direct flight from Winnipeg to Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport and with the possibility to provide new, convenient connectivity options to visit Riviera Nayarit from Canada.
