Worth The Time

A good 48 minute review about what’s happened and happening to Boeing.

Interesting comment in the video regarding the merger with McDonnell-Douglas and how it is thought to have changed Boeing’s method of producing aircraft. Labour issues for the Seattle workforce has been an ongoing issue for Boeing since the 777 which was partially built ‘off-shore’ followed by more of the same with the 787. Also Boeing no longer has its own delivery and training pilots who apparently got too expensive and have been contracted out to a global crewing agency for several years.

The problem with the "risk sharing partner" model is that the partners usually have lower exposure to the risk.  The supply chain breaks down far to easy, leading to delays nad quality control suffers due to Familiarity breeding contempt.

If the schedule becomes primary then quality is going to suffer.  there are no two ways about it.

I wonder if many airlines stipulate only Seattle assembled aircraft in their 787 purchase agreements? Same parts but a non-union workforce in South Carolina. However it seems the union group in Seattle has quality control issues with the USAF 767 tankers.

Really the story is only actually presented from the Charlston plant.  I am willing to bet that the story would be similar in the Everett plant.  It likely wouldn't be as rampant as alleged in the story due to protections offered by the Union.  Fear in the workforce creates compliance.  Unfortunate but true.

Fear is a great short-term motivator, but long-term it creates resentment, dissension, and complacency.
