This airplane is going to be around for awhile.

Yeah, sure (heavy sarcasm), that's what they said about the 747s they're replacing too!

They added 9 feet of length vs a 777-300,  I am sure Boeing engineers made sure the aircraft could take it. Looking at Wikipedia, MTOW seems to be the same.

The -400’s have been in service for many years at BA and elsewhere but the new 777 -9 performance justifies retiring them in 2024.

I think you missed the joke (my fault, undoubtedly, for being just a little too subtle).  The 747 first entered service with BA, according to wikipedia, in 1974.  If the 777-9 replaces the last one in 2024, well, that's a pretty good run - 50 years!  (of course the later versions are hardly comparable to the early ones).

I wonder what a hard landing or hard de-rotation is going to do to that fuselage.

Vs

Probably not good but as mentioned only an extra 9’ of fuselage so following the FCTM should keep you out of trouble.

Nothing too drastically changing for specs with the "NEW" 777, more efficient engines, better wing and upgraded systems & avionics. Meant to do the same mission but cheaper.
