CALGARY, Jan. 20, 2019 /CNW/ – Today Swoop celebrates its final of four inaugural flights to Mexico this January. Flight WO604 departs from Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) at 11:00 a.m. PST and arrives at Mazatlán International Airport (MZT) at 4:19 p.m. PST.

Today’s flight to Mazatlán will be met on arrival with a water arch, spirited mariachi band and travellers will be greeted by the Ministry of Tourism of the province of Sinaloa.

“Mexico is a popular travel destination for Canadians, with over 1.9 million visitors annually,” said Karen McIsaac, Senior Advisor of Communications at Swoop. “This additional route to Mazatlán complements our Cancun and Puerto Vallarta destinations as top choices to frequent and is the perfect opportunity for travellers to experience choice when it comes to affordable air travel.”

YXX now serves our region with daily flights to Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, as well as multiple weekly flights to Nevada and Mexico.”

CALGARY, Jan. 24, 2019 /CNW/ – Today Swoop joined the Abbotsford International Airport to celebrate the expansion of the YXX terminal.

The expansion includes two additional gates, an enlarged baggage claim area, extended CATSA pre-board security screening area and a passenger departure lounge that is double the size of the pre-existing lounge. Swoop and YXX will celebrate with a ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshments and guest speakers.

As an airport that mainly supports low-cost travel, the expansion is a direct result of the growing success of low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers like Swoop. The Abbotsford International Airport plans to expand further into discount operations in the coming years, which is a welcome strategy for Swoop as it shares the same vision.

“From day one Abbotsford has been an enthusiastic partner for Swoop,” said Steven Greenway, President of Swoop. “It’s no surprise that their open-minded approach when working with carriers and their passion for creating a stress free, seamless airport travel experience has led to record breaking passenger volumes and this impressive terminal expansion. We are confident that Abbotsford will continue to deliver valuable enhancements for years to come that mutually benefit its partners, like Swoop, and the people and businesses in the Lower Mainland.”

“YXX is one of Canada’s fastest growing airports, having just completed a $5 million terminal expansion without increasing direct or indirect airline fees,” said Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun. “YXX is very proud to offer one of the most competitive airport platforms in Canada. We look forward to another record year at YXX with the addition of more domestic and international routes, providing our region with our more travel options. Together, working with Swoop, we are making air travel more accessible for Canadians”.

Swoop currently operates two domestic routes from Abbotsford to/from Edmonton and Hamilton, and three international routes between Las Vegas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. On January 22, 2019 Swoop released its summer schedule which included new daily service from Abbotsford to/from London, ON beginning May 24, 2019 and the extension of the popular Las Vegas service throughout the summer.

Flights are available for booking now through October 26, 2019.

Unscheduled maintenance’ strands Vegas-bound Swoop passengers in Hamilton airport

News provided by CBC News – link to full article

Samantha Craggs · CBC News · Posted: July 05, 2019

swoop-airlines.jpg A Swoop flight from Hamilton to Las Vegas – and by extension, from Las Vegas to Hamilton – was cancelled yesterday because of “unscheduled maintenance.” (Andrew Collins/CBC)

Disgruntled passengers who thought they were going to Las Vegas are stranded in Hamilton because of the “unscheduled maintenance” of a Swoop jet.

A Swoop flight headed from Hamilton to Las Vegas on Thursday was cancelled, the carrier says, because the airline has to do maintenance to one of its twin-jet Boeing 737s. It’s also impacted the flight from Las Vegas to Hamilton.

The plane was “involved in an incident requiring a maintenance inspection,” Swoop said on its website. “We sincerely apologize to our travellers for the interruption in their plans however safety will always be at the forefront of our decision making.”

“We are working on re-accommodations and will send emails to the travellers once everything is finalized.”

Swoop said it’s arranged a “recovery flight” from Hamilton to Vegas for 6:30 p.m. today. It will run a flight from Las Vegas to Hamilton at 9 p.m.

“Affected travellers will be provided accommodation, meal and transportation vouchers, as needed and those that wish to cancel can do so for a full refund,” it said.

Jaimie Singleton of Toronto was on the 7:30 p.m. flight Thursday. She and her friend hoped to make it to Las Vegas to join friends for fourth of July fireworks, but it didn’t happen.

Singleton said they sat on a sweltering plane for about 40 minutes and saw a flight attendant require medical attention for what looked like heat stroke. Then they were shuffled off the plane and spent the evening trying to get more information. At one point, the departure screen showed that their flight had already left, which “obviously had not happened.”

Around 11 p.m., the carrier paid for a room at the Sheraton in downtown Hamilton, she said, and gave them meal vouchers worth $10 each.

Singleton said she and her friend will only be in Las Vegas until Sunday, and now they’re losing a whole day of that trip.

It’s “disappointing,” said Singleton. But “it’s not the end of the world. We’ll have fun regardless.”

Hamilton police were called to the airport just after 10 p.m. Thursday to help Swoop manage passengers, said Const. Lorraine Edwards.

There were allegations a crew member heard a metal object enter the airplane engine, she said, but there’s “no evidence to suggest this happened.”

“As of last night, there was nothing criminal in nature brought forward to us.”

Once they boarded the plane, they were struck by how hot it was.

“The craziest temperature I likely have ever felt,” said Webster, adding that she was seated near the left engine and could see the workers continue to inspect it and looking around on the ground nearby. They had heard unconfirmed reports that someone had thrown ‘change’ in the engine.

Wow... what a clusterf**ck!

Maybe but of course we are only hearing one side of the issue.  To me it looks like a full schedule with no slack to allow for a rescue aircraft .    Something more and more carriers are facing with the shortage of aircraft vs planned schedules due to the Max crisis. These ripple onto carriers that did not have any Max but did rely on wetlease or substitute  aircraft to plump up their planned schedules or of course aircraft from a parent company that could do the rescue missing but no longer available due to the Max grounding. . I do not know of course if Scoop fits this pattern.

It sounds suspiciously like the situation where a passenger is walking across the tarmac approaching the aircraft, and, in accordance with their culture, the person decided to throw some loose change into the engine intake “for good luck”.  The carrier is then obliged to find some Maintenance people to carry out an inspection of the engine.  It’s happened before, and I don’t know if Swoop even has any Mx personnel at that airport.  If not, then they either have to find a contractor or move some in.

What!? and they didn't even order a pizza?

30° day with soaring humidity, 3.5 hours in an aircraft with no ground air, too cheap to fire up the APU, won't let pax off, FA taken away on the ambulance with heat stroke... what's the Captain doing here, is this how ultra low cost Swoop culture is?

You know this for a fact? I highly doubt your sh!t chucking version of this event is even remotely close. Hamilton airport is somewhat notorious for having lousy infrastructure and being cheap to the point of lunacy. I suspect, I don't know (unlike you) that the APU was probably U/S and no conditioned air cart was available. I know the 737NG pretty well and the A/C system is pretty robust.

Nice try though. ?

Oh, did they order pizza? My mistake, it wasn't reported in the story...

Facts?

Weather is certainly a fact.

Time on aircraft, and being restricted from getting off is reported in the story. Is it fake news?

No air conditioning, again reported in the story by eye witnesses, and evidenced by heat stroke in an FA taken to hospital. Was that fake news too?

As you say, APUs are pretty effective at cooling the cabin, so didn't sound like they turned it on, was it broken? Maybe... but if that's the case why are you leaving 100 or 150 people on your aircraft for hours during a heat wave?

My comment stands...

What's the Captain doing here? People should no be restricted to remaining on a hot aircraft for that length of time. It's our responsibility to hold boarding, or deplane the aircraft when it subjects passengers to dangerous conditions like this.

Is that chucking **bleep**?

My friend is in YHZ now trying to get home after her flight cancelled today... they are telling her not until Tuesday afternoon...

They won't book her on AC, flights left with open seats to YYZ this evening, flights with open seats tomorrow morning, and all the agents say is they don't have an agreement with Air Canada... have to wait until Tuesday, no accommodation, and no pizza is being provided!

Get real Swoop! People have jobs to get to...

In the old days airlines protected each other's passengers.  Even poached passengers from each other. It was hoped that the pax would like the service and book with you next time.

I have been wondering, with pax rights becoming more of a big issue,  if a new era of cooperation will develop?

Everybody's aircraft break down. Keep the people moving.

Do the pax realize the only reason they can't fly on a competitors aircraft is petty management?

Sorry for your friend but what we see is "cheap" coming home to roost.  Cheap has an aircraft problem but Mother will not or can not help out.

No doubt you get what you pay for, but when you are stranding people for days you should be buying them a ticket on another airline.

It's not like this is a place on the other side of an ocean with weekly service and no alternatives... this is a city served by multiple airlines, each offering multiple direct flights, not to mention connecting flights through other cities, yow, yul, etc. There are lots of options

It's one thing for an airline to bump to the next flight, or tomorrow morning or something, but to say your flight is not for 2 days when there are other options? And not provide accommodation? Wow.

Unscheduled maintenance is not fun, but it happens at every airline. When Air Canada recently cancelled most of their flights, not even for mechanical reasons but their software issues, and stranded tens of thousands of people languishing at airports, I doubt they bought everyone pizza and put them in 5 star hotels. Mechanical things sometimes break, sometimes a few break at the same time, and then cancellations and delays happen. It's happened before, it will happen again.
