What a great story. Also now having the visual technology to re-tell it so well. These WWII airman are slowly disappearing so the video interviews of their experiences are priceless.

My father was born three weeks before George HW Bush and also signed up (RCAF) days after his 18th birthday. He would have gone sooner but with his older brother already in the Army his mother wouldn’t sign the papers for him to go early.

There is a definite sense of duty about that generation. For example Bush’s Navy aircraft disabled yet completed his planned bombing run. Same with this story completing the aerial photo mission to assist the war effort.

Amazing. Great post Kip.

Had a great conversation with a Bombardier from WWII several years ago.  Mentioned we were entering a Flour Bombing contest at the local flying club.  He actually drew up a plan to build a crude (but effictive) bomb sight for our contest. Once we got the hang of it it actually worked pretty well.

These guys were the real deal.

Back in '94, one of my students scored an honourable mention at the local bombing contest. Her bomb - (we used barf bags filled with sand) - went through the windshield on a car belonging to one of the flying club members. He believed he had parked far enough away to be safe. WRONG!  😱
