In July, the beleaguered nation logged more homicide cases than in any month in its long recorded history.

Prosecutors opened a staggering 2,599 homicide investigations — about 84 murders per day — last month, the country’s national public security agency said.

Since 2015, the nation’s violent and balkanized drug cartels have waged war in the streets, villages and all places in between. As the drug lords have grown rich they are expanding into other criminal enterprises, including stolen goods and fuel.

I wonder when this factoid will start to impact the travel industry. I realize it’s a big country and so far the tourist areas are relatively safe (although I did read 8 bodies were found on the street in Cancun recently), but this crime wave doesn’t seem to be ending.
