Guest
Quote Germany plans to test Airbus and Audi's flying taxi concept The Ingolstadt test could help deal with congestion on the roads below. The German government has signed a letter of intent greenlighting tests for the flying taxi around Audi's home city of Ingolstadt. Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer saw the autonomous, mixed-mode transports bringing a "new dimension of mobility" and creating a "huge opportunity" for companies exploring flying car tech. There's no mention of when tests might start, although that's likely contingent on when the companies can produce functional prototypes. The move comes at a key moment for Airbus and Audi. Uber is ramping upits flying taxi development with a research center in Paris, putting pressure on its German rivals to step up their game. They're clearly doing just that. Even if it takes a long time before the machines reach the skies, this shows that they're committed to making their project a practical reality. And that, in turn, increases the chances that you'll one day hail a flying taxi to speed up your commute.

Guest
Quote A flying car will make its debut at Farnborough International Airshow PAL-V Liberty (© PAL-V) RelaxnewsPublished Sunday, July 8, 2018 11:22AM EDT Later this month, the “world's first flying car production model,” the PAL-V Liberty, will take flight at Farnborough International Airshow, taking place July 16 to 22 in England. The biennial public airshow is a trade exhibition for aerospace and defense industries, and this year it will host the PAL-V Liberty and its aviation debut. PAL-V Liberty is the name of the futuristic aircraft that resembles the offspring of a car and helicopter, however the Dutch makers of the machine describe it as a gyroplane. Related Stories Five trends at the Frankfurt auto show Porsche joins race to produce flying car High hopes: Dutch company launches flying car at Geneva show “The PAL-V is not a helicopter. In flying mode the PAL-V is a gyroplane. The difference? The rotor of the helicopter is powered by an engine. The blades of the PAL-V are not powered. They are powered by the wind. As long there as is airflow they rotate. They act like a continuously open parachute.” The flying car is getting close to completion, with the company saying it's currently going through the last step of the certification process: compliance demonstration. "It takes a lot of testing to prove that the PAL-V Liberty complies with the regulations," said Mike Stekelenburg, PAL-V's Chief Engineer, explaining that the design philosophy of using proven technology, rather than those still requiring new regulations “enables a realistic and imminent first product delivery date." Robert Dingemanse, CEO of PAL-V, stated: "The production model is the moment of truth. The moment where the wall between fiction and facts is torn down” also noting that "Once full certification is granted in 2020 we will hand over the keys of the PAL-V Liberty to our first customers." And yes, there are already pioneer clients gaining experience at flying schools in preparation for deliveries commencing in 2020. The Farnborough event marks the first time that the PAL-V Liberty is present at an airshow and in the U.K.

Revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show, the Liberty Pioneer features a striking orange-and-black livery and a stylish interior. It is also equipped with a dual-control cockpit, electronic flight instruments, and a "full" carbon package, PAL-V says. Production will be limited to 90 units. Deliveries of the gyrocopter-based Liberty will begin in 2020, which, the company claims, will be the first production flying car. The Rotax piston-engined, two-seater tricycle was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva motor show and was also displayed at last year's Farnborough air show. PAL-V A prototype has been conducint tests since 2012, with flight trials having taken place at Gilze-Rijen air base in the Netherlands. PAL-V told FlightGlobal at Farnborough that flight tests of a production-conforming model were scheduled to begin during the second quarter of 2019. Around 150h of trials will be required to gain European Aviation Safety Agency small rotorcraft certification. PAL-V Chief engineer Mike Stekelenburg says: "The gyroplane principle not only provides us with a safe and easy-to-operate flying car but it also enables us to make it compact and within existing regulations, which is the most important factor to build a useable flying car." By mid-2018, the Raamsdonksveer-based company had received orders for around 50 units. PAL-V
