That sounds to me like more than their fair share.

You're mis-reading that statistic.  Should be 1/10 of the taxpayers paid more than 1/2 of the taxes.

THE PROBLEM WITH SOCIALISM = CANADA

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this…

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20”. Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men ? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving). The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,”but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!” “That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill.

I absolutely love this.  I have posted it here a few times myself.  Some memes and little story/examples/jokes like this look good on the surface but breakdown when you look closer but this one actually does hold true on the surface and when you look deeper - it's the perfect description of a progressive tax system.

Many antifa, leftist, university student types actually believe that the "rich" pay no tax while, in fact they pay the vast majority of tax.  They believe that the "rich" should be taxed more while not understanding/acknowledging that they pay no tax at all (aside from GST and consumption tax - which is insignificant when compared to income tax)

Looks like Hollywood won’t be satisfied until there’s blood on the streets..

Controversial film ‘The Hunt’ is coming to theaters after backlash

Remember how ‘The Hunt’ was taken out of theaters? Well, it’s back

The 2019 horror-thriller film “The Hunt” will hit theaters months after it received heavy backlash from President Donald Trump.

What is the movie ‘The Hunt’ about?

  • The film will follow 12 strangers who are stuck on an island where they have to kill each other to survive, according to Variety.

What was ‘The Hunt’ controversy about?

  • “The Hunt” made headlines back in late summer 2019. It was originally slated to hit theaters on Sept. 27.
  • Universal pulled the film and its marketing materials after a pair of mass shootings hit El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, in August, as I wrote for the Deseret News.
  • The Hollywood Reporter explained the screenplay included one character saying they will slaughter “a dozen deplorables” — a reference that Hillary Clinton made popular when references supporters of President Trump.
  • Universal and Blumhouse canceled the release of the film.

When is it coming to theaters?

What did President Trump say about ‘The Hunt’?

  • Trump criticized the film: “Liberal Hollywood is Racist at the highest level, and with great Anger and Hate!” wrote the president. “They like to call themselves ‘Elite,’ but they are not Elite. In fact, it is often the people that they so strongly oppose that are actually the Elite. The movie coming out is made in order to inflame and cause chaos. They create their own violence, and then try to blame others. They are the true Racists, and are very bad for our Country!”

The Marginal Tax rate payed by the rich is by definition "more"  However I do not think the Tax system is fair on the rich either.  Why does a rich person pay a higher percentage of his money than a lower income earner?

Flat tax is a better system because EVERYONE pays the same ratio of tax on their income.  Say 25% as a nice round easy number.  make %10,000 pay $2500. Make $100,000 pay $25,000

easy, straight forward and less red tape.  Now make it so there are no tax deductions.  Tax is tax Period.  no hiding income. no one can argue but the low income earners will bitch because now they actually have to pay something into the system.

Now go to the best system IMHO.

Give me 100% of my income.  Let me spend it as I please but only tax me on what I spend.  Spending is what makes the economy run.  If I have more I spend more.  Tax all goods and services (maybe a few exceptions) at 25% (round number) and let the revenues flow.

Do away with all of the other taxes and surcharges.

The effect here is you can get rid of an entire branch of the Government.... The CRA.  No need for a tax return anymore.

As for the last statement in the quote above.  Consumption tax at the right level would equal or better the income tax.  High tax payers use shelters to hide their income from the tax man or just move it off shore.  Consumption guarantees collection.

Donald Trump Jr.

Democrats are becoming increasingly deranged and violent. Just this week:

- A violent Democrat leftist attacked a 15-year-old kid who was a Trump supporter. That young man's name is Nate. I met Nate when I was in New Hampshire (see pic) and he seems like a great guy.

- Another radical Democrat drives his car through a group of Trump supporters registering voters.

- A man wearing a red hat is beaten and sent to the hospital because the attacker thought it was a MAGA hat... it wasn’t, it just looked like one.

When will anyone in the main stream media say anything? Where are all the “journalists?" Do they condone this type of behavior? Are they simply complicit because it’s against Trump supporters and conservatives? Their silence on all of this is very telling.

If the story were reversed and it was conservatives doing this to peaceful left wing supporters, it would be the biggest story in America right now.

CNN, MSNBC etc would have this all over the airwaves all the time. they’d make every comparison they could and have anyone on who would be willing to talk poorly about the Right on-air making sure the sick attacker is grouped in with all other conservatives.

Yet no one has even heard about the above attacks. The establishment media is a total disgrace and embarrassment to what was once a noble profession.

https://globalnews.ca/news/6565225/utah-senate-polygamy-decriminalized/

Following the wide acceptance of same sex marriage, polygamy decriminalization efforts have taken longer than I thought but here's the potential start of it.

Was there ever any doubt that this would become an issue? It was discussed on this forum at some length a few years back and some of us said "keep watching" because no other outcome is likely. The predictable response was "don't be silly, you're a homophobe."

But, it's a bit like thinking transgender rights of access was only about washrooms. Female athletes are having second thoughts now but their current dilemma was easily anticipated and that possibility was always front and centre in the WDYTWGTH file. Their predictable response was also "don't be silly, you're transphobic."

I'm sure the standing arguments used for same sex marriage will apply here too and will include such talking points as consenting adults, equal protection guarantees under the law, the fundamental right to marriage, freedom of religion and the notion that since it doesn't effect you, and it's not hurting you, it's none of your business.

Given the current conditions and overall level of acceptance (and inclusion) in our society, I now find it difficult to put forward a compelling argument to discriminate against polygamists. The notion that it victimizes young girls is a red herring.... that's a separate issue and it's already illegal.

If you are opposed to this, what do you say to the notion that I consider you to be "polyphobic"....

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Bernie Sanders socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. Could not be any simpler than that. (Please pass this on) These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Ok, to address your point, neither works.

So what do we do?

I don’t ever recall any one fleeing a Capitalist society to seek refuge in a Socialist one. I think you can figure this one out for yourself.

Of course it would be a Liberal who would make this suggestion.  In a nut shell he wants to have all of those who fail to control their own debt, rewarded and I guess those who control their own personal debts will be the ones who pay for the "grasshoppers".

Manitoba Liberal leader calls on feds to forgive personal, government debts

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS
Posted March 2, 2020 2:29 pm

The leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party is calling on Ottawa to create a massive debt relief program for individuals and governments across Canada. The Canadian Press

The leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party has written to the prime minister to ask for a massive debt relief program for individuals and governments across Canada.

Dougald Lamont says the federal government should have the Bank of Canada guarantee or assume much of the trillions of dollars of debt held by people and provinces.

Lamont says many people are facing crushing debt loads and provincial governments are paying a lot of interest on their debts.

He says debt forgiveness would be a way to rejuvenate the economy and prevent bankruptcies.

A retired economics professor at Carleton University, however, says the idea would likely lead to a dramatic rise in inflation.

Nick Rowe says the Bank of Canada would have to print a lot of money to wipe out so much debt, and that would destroy its ability to keep inflation rates on target.

“This one is a little different; two different versions, two different morals. Here’s the old version: The ant works hard in the withering heat and rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold. The moral of the old story: Be responsible for yourself! Modern version: The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving. CBC, CTV and Global show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. The insect kingdom is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in an ant community of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green ...’

“A group called ‘Occupy the Anthill’ stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the Reverend Al Sharpton and a group of grasshoppers kneeling down to pray for the grasshopper while he damns the ants. He later appears on MSNBC to complain that rich ants do not care about those insects less fortunate. Prime Minister Trudeau condemns the ants and blames  former PM Harper for the grasshopper’s plight. Activists exclaim in an interview on   that the ants has gotten rich off the backs of the poor grasshoppers, and both call for an immediate tax hike on ants to make them pay his fair share. Finally, the Liberal Minority Government drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Grasshopper Czar and given to the grasshopper. The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading grasshopper friends finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government-owned ant house he is in, which, as you’ll recall, just happens to be the ant’s old home, the house crumbles around them because the grasshoppers don’t maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again. The grasshopper is found dead from starvation, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once prosperous and peaceful ant neighborhood. The moral of the modern version of the story: Be careful how you vote .”
