Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems

The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems

Synopsis

Expand/Collapse Synopsis
It's been known for years that usability testing can dramatically improve products. But with a typical price tag of $5,000 to $10,000 for a usability consultant to conduct each round of tests, it rarely happens.

In this how-to companion to Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, Steve Krug spells out an approach to usability testing that anyone can easily apply to their own web site, application, or other product. (As he said in Don't Make Me Think, "It's not rocket surgery".)

In this new book, Steve explains how to:
  • Test any design, from a sketch on a napkin to a fully-functioning web site or application
  • Keep your focus on finding the most important problems (because no one has the time or resources to fix them all

Reporting to Ed Sims, Executive Vice-President, Commercial, Alfredo will head the further development and rollout of WestJet's digital strategy as the airline transitions from a low-cost, point-to-point carrier to a fully-fledged network airline. Along with leading the WestJet Digital team at the airline's headquarters in Calgary, Alfredo will begin to build a second team in Toronto. Together, these teams will collaborate in building out WestJet's full digital capabilities including the creation of a Toronto-based Innovation Centre of Excellence using non-traditional, leading-edge digital products, solutions and partnerships for WestJet.

"It is through digital transformation, coupled with our WestJetters' caring touch, that we will be able to provide the ultimate guest-centric service," said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet President and CEO. "Alfredo's digital understanding, experience and commitment to that core focus will allow us to innovate faster, collaborate more effectively and serve our guests better. I look forward to welcoming Alfredo to our talented team."

"We are most fortunate to have Alfredo's vision and deep experience to lead our digital transformation," said Ed Sims, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial. "The exciting work we are undertaking to become a global carrier will be greatly supported by best-in-class digital products and services. I firmly believe that Alfredo and his team will transform the WestJet guest experience across all digital channels over the entire travel journey and across all guest touch points."

"I am very excited to be joining WestJet at this important juncture as it embarks on a bold journey in becoming a global airline," said Alfredo Tan. "In a world where change is the only constant, there are a select group of companies that are open to re-inventing themselves. They are willing to undergo the transformation required to drive substantial growth and delight customers today and tomorrow. WestJet has the culture, the people and the DNA to continue to innovate. I look forward to playing a part in this transformation."

Alfredo joins WestJet as a former Facebook and Instagram Executive in Canada, where he was a founding team member in early 2009. Alfredo went on to work with the leadership team in Asia-Pacific in 2016 to help launch Facebook and Instagram in the Philippines. Similar management and leadership assignments brought him throughout Southeast Asia and Latin America, where he was responsible for helping to build culture, drive operational excellence, strategic planning and accelerate revenue growth in emerging markets. His 20-year career has been focused in technology, digital media, enterprise marketing and strategy. Prior to his tenure with Facebook and Instagram, Alfredo also held leadership positions at Yahoo!, Sympatico MSN and Bell Canada.

Launch of WestJet Link flights from Calgary to 5 Alberta, B.C. cities delayed by 3 months

WestJet offering alternative transportation, refunds, or rescheduled flights to impacted customers

WestJet's launch of its planned new regional air service, WestJet Link, is being delayed by three months, the company said in a release Wednesday.

In November, WestJet announced a capacity purchase agreement with Pacific Coastal Airlines that would connect Lethbridge, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat, Cranbrook and Prince George with the Calgary International Airport.

The daily routes were set to begin between March 7 and 31. Now, the launch has been delayed until June 20 through 22.

WestJet said in a statement that the delay is due to Pacific Coastal's continuing work to meet the company's operational requirements.

Pacific Coastal is a private airline based out of Vancouver International Airport's south terminal. It flies to 50 destinations around B.C.

The flights will be operated by Pacific Coastal's 34-seat Saab 340B planes, painted in WestJet colours.

"WestJet apologizes to our guests for the inconvenience these delays may cause," said Brian Znotins, WestJet vice-president of network planning.

The company said impacted guests will be offered different options including alternative transportation, a full refund or a rescheduled flight.

The company said it's in the process of reaching out to guests whose itineraries were affected.

So let's see; we have a small carrier trying to satisfy a mainline carrier's marketing objectives, which are clearly beyond the smaller unit's operational capability. When the impact of the Regulator's hands off, look the other way style is added to the mix, a sorry picture begins to emerge that looks a whole lot like the unhealthy environment that existed at the time of the Dryden crash as was exposed by Justice Moshansky.

Jump to conclusions much?

The two parties obviously recognized the timelines were too aggressive (which is not surprising....). They delayed the launch, which is smart and SAFE. Contrary to whatever spin you want to put on it.

Someone I know who will be looking for their first flying job soon tells me this job listing has been running for many months (and a similar one for Captains):

https://www.pilotcareercentre.com/Pilot-Job-Posting-Pilot-Opening-Pilot-Job/11407/Canada/First-Officers/B1900-%26-Saab-340/Pacific-Coastal-Airlines

A couple of interesting points buried in the text:

"Pacific Coastal Airlines is seeking First Officers to join our operations team in British Columbia and Southern Alberta."

"Please note: As pilot applications far exceed job vacancies, preference will be given to candidates with qualifications beyond the minimum requirements,"

Hahahaha, yeah, riiiiight.

The ads for AMEs say the same regarding BC and southern AB. I think they want people to be very mobile.  Don’t know what the wages are like, but with all the big guys hiring like mad, it should be interesting.
