8 killed by driver on bike path in 'cowardly act of terror'

By COLLEEN LONG and JAKE PEARSON

A

NEW YORK (AP) -- A man in a rented pickup truck mowed down pedestrians and cyclists along a busy bike path near the World Trade Center memorial on Tuesday, killing at least eight and seriously injuring 11 in what the mayor called "a particularly cowardly act of terror."

The driver was shot in the abdomen by police after jumping out of the truck with what turned out to be a fake gun in each hand and shouting what witnesses said was "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is great," authorities said. The man underwent surgery and was in critical condition but was expected to survive.

Officials who were not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity identified the attacker as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov and said he is from Uzbekistan and came to the U.S. legally in 2010. He has a Florida driver's license but may have been staying in New Jersey, they said.

The driver barreled along the bike path in a rented Home Depot truck for the equivalent of about 14 blocks, or around eight-tenths of a mile, before slamming into a small yellow school bus. The mayhem and the burst of police gunfire set off panic in the lower Manhattan neighborhood and left the pavement strewn with mangled bicycles and bodies that were soon covered with sheets.

"I saw a lot of blood over there. A lot of people on the ground," said Chen Yi, an Uber driver.

Eugene Duffy, a chef at a waterfront restaurant, said, "So many police came, and they didn't know what was happening. People were screaming. Females were screaming at the top of their lungs."

Argentina's foreign minister said the dead included Argentine citizens.

Police closed off streets across the western edge of lower Manhattan along the Hudson River, and officers rushed into the neighborhood just as people were preparing for Halloween festivities, including the big annual parade through Greenwich Village.

A police bomb squad scoured the truck but found no explosives.

"This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

New York and other cities around the globe have been on high alert against attacks by extremists in vehicles. The Islamic State has been exhorting its followers to mow down people, and England, France and Germany have seen deadly vehicle attacks in the past year or so.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called it a "lone wolf" attack and said there was no evidence to suggest it was part of a wider plot.

City Police Commissioner James O'Neill said a statement the driver made as he got out of the truck and the method of attack led police to conclude it was a terrorist act.

On Twitter, President Donald Trump called it "another attack by a very sick and deranged person" and declared, "NOT IN THE U.S.A.!"

While police did not specifically blame the Islamic State for the New York bloodshed, Trump railed against the extremist group, tweeting, "We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!"

Police said Saipov rented the truck at about 2 p.m. in New Jersey, entering the bike path about an hour later on West Street a few blocks from the new World Trade Center, the site of the deadliest terror attack in U.S. history. The truck then turned at Chambers Street, hitting the school bus and injuring two adults and two children.

A paintball gun and a pellet gun were found at the scene, police said. At least two covered-over bodies could be seen lying on the bike path, and the front end of the truck was smashed in, as was the side of the school bus.

Tom Gay, a school photographer, heard people saying there was an accident and went down to West Street, where a woman came around the corner shouting, "He has a gun! He has a gun!"

Gay said he stuck his head around the corner and saw a slender man in a blue track suit running on West Street holding a gun. He said a heavyset man was chasing him.

He said he heard five or six shots, and the man in the tracksuit fell to the ground, gun still raised in the air. He said a man came over and kicked the gun out of his hand.

Trump said on Twitter that the driver in Tuesday’s attack “came into our country through what is called the ‘Diversity Visa Lottery Program,’ a Chuck Schumer beauty.”

Officials said the attacker is an immigrant from Uzbekistan who came to the U.S. legally in 2010. They haven’t said whether he came in through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, which covers immigrants from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S.

Malcolm

I don't know who you're referring to as 'official theys', but my 'unofficial media theys' keep saying the perp came into Country through Chuck Schumer's diversity program?

Governor Cuomo is giving a 'pep talk' to New Yorkers at the moment.

When will the people grow suspicious of the left wing politicians telling them that they're not scared and that they will stand up and pretend everything is normal, no matter how many good guys are killed attending public events and participating in everyday activities. Cuomo claims 'they'll' never win' because we are brave etc., but never offers anything substantive.

Next come the local cops who tell us more of everything security wise will be seen in the streets going forward including 'heavy weapons teams and the public should expect an increase in personal bag searches and the like.

On an almost every day basis we're told we are at war with an ideology, an enemy that cannot be seen, but for our part, we're supposed to go on pretending everything is normal even though the enemy is operating freely amongst us and targeting the very events that represent normalcy?

And while we're acting out the all things should look normal philosophy we should remind ourselves of fearless leader's wise proclamation, 'diversity is our strength'.

We are in very big trouble!

The low level 'official' likely doesn't want to step on a political land mine and is smart enough to fashion his response to media queries accordingly.

Trump is an 'official' too and a named one at that. I trust he is getting his information from reliable sources and his position grants him the ability to speak freely.

One would certainly hope so but based on his track record of shooting from the lip,  that would be a "Maybe".:D

But as far as I know, although he does shoot from the hip, sometimes uncomfortably early in, his remarks / allegations have always been fair & accurate in spite of all the media ranting to the contrary. I honestly believe Trump enjoys setting the media up to fail.

Looks like he was 1/2 right.

Quote

Trump earlier in the day on Twitter that the driver in Tuesday's attack "came into our country through what is called the 'Diversity Visa Lottery Program,' a Chuck Schumer beauty" — a reference to the Senate's Democratic leader.

Schumer fired back from the Senate floor, accusing Trump of "politicizing" the tragedy.

Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona, said on Twitter that Trump was unfairly blaming Schumer for the diversity visa program.

Flake, one of Trump's chief Republican foes in Congress, said Schumer was among a group of eight Republican and Democratic senators who proposed eliminating the program three years ago as part of a broader bipartisan bill to overhaul U.S. immigration laws.

Officials said the suspect in the attack is an immigrant from Uzbekistan who came to the United States legally in March 2010.

"According to reports to my office, [Sayfullo] Saipov is a lawful permanent resident who immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan on a diversity visa over five years ago," Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley wrote in a letter to the secretary of state and the acting secretary of Homeland Security.

Of course the program lets in 50,000 a year so it appears the threat level is very low. Killing the program because of a "one of" would be like grounding a type of aircraft because of one crash.

“ If All You're Worried About After A Terror Attack Is 'Islamophobia,' You're A Gigantic Fool “

“ However you feel about Islam — if you think the religion is inherently peaceful in spite of terrorism, or if you think it is violent and hateful by its very nature — there are still certain facts you cannot avoid or deny. The terrorist in New York yesterday was Muslim. The terrorist in Orlando was Muslim. As were the terrorists in San Bernardino, and Chattanooga, and Boston, and Ft. Hood, and on 9-11, and in dozens of other cases in the United States, and thousands of other cases across the world. It is not "Islamophobia" to notice this fact. It is not bigotry to be disturbed by it. And the headline, the main point, of these blood events is certainly not that Muslims might get their feelings hurt. You are a fool, or something much worse, if that's your primary concern.”

We don't know what kind of threat level the program poses Malcolm.

If 50 of every 50000 do bad over a five year period with their acts of terror, the assessment is troubling, but if only one of the 50000 somehow manages to kill thousands, the picture becomes very dark.

As it stands we don't have the foggiest idea who the bad guys are, which make immigration schemes that allow people in just because especially dangerous.

If there's any case at all to support continuing immigration, and I doubt there is, then I agree with the President's merit based approach.

Happy terrorists; can it get any better?

The public will now pay to house & care for this guy, his bride, and spawn for untold years to come; quite the deal for the people in return for extending their welcoming hands.

Immigration restrictions are no longer the answer here, it’s too late for that. That’s not to say “give up on it” just to note that it is past time to move on. There is a cost to liberal values, in this case the cost is enhanced surveillance, monitoring and interdiction. This is labour intensive and expensive work. It is time to open your wallet, pay your taxes and give up some freedoms. In short, these interdiction activities are the new cost of freedom.

The natural tendency here is to build a “fortress mentality”. Ironically, that very attitude will tend to demonize, ghettoize and alienate an entire group of people with an increasing population demographic… just like Europe. That alone will result in a pernicious cycle that will tend to feed on itself. The situation is interesting, at least to me, because a sudden switch to conservative values now, based on the inevitable radical violence, will actually cause more radicalization than might otherwise occur. Perversely, it will be disenchanted Liberals who don't want to pay for their own folly who lead this charge.

I, and many others, have pointed out that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with secular democracy and urged caution with regard to concentration and demographics. That got us branded racists even though the questions are valid and failure to consider them will prove very expensive. Liberals will call their overreaction to these events a "defensive strategy" and blame the government for giving they/them what they/them insisted on having.
