WTH!

If this doesn't make you angry I don't know what will;

"The group said Montreal police routinely arrest undocumented migrants and hand them over to the Canada Border Services Agency. It wants that practice stopped."

Shocking!  People who are outside the law being arrested by the police.  Note that it doesn't say what CBSA does when the migrants are presented to them - likely just given a hearing date and released anyway.

"Sanctuary, I think, applies more to people who are without any status in Canada or without any documentation giving them the right to reside," Jeanes said.

People who are without status in the country should be processed through the system. Those that meet the requirements for refugee or immigrant status can stay and the rest should be sent back where they came from.

Undocumented migrants include visitors who've overstayed their visa, failed refugee claimants and those who've had their refugee status revoked.

I may be on the fringe but I feel that anyone who has had due process and then has their refugee claim denied or revoked should be out of the country immediately.  Why would anyone think that someone in this position should be given access to public services and be exempt from being arrested.  Read that carefully.  I'm not saying that someone should be refused their due process.  Someone comes into Canada illegally and are immediately welcomed by the RCMP, given food, shelter, clothes, medical care and access to all services including a lawyer to help them through the process.  If, a year later, having had the hearing and the appeal they are found not to be legitimate refugees why are they still in the country?  And if they are somehow still in the country and come into contact with the police - THROW THEM OUT ALREADY.

Everyday one hears something dumber than yesterday.

If a guy walks up to the Canadian border at a recognised border crossing and attempts entry at the counter with the border guard in it he is turned away.

If that same person then goes a mile down a road that runs parallel along the border and then walks across to the waiting arms of the RCMP he is then taken back to the same counter and the same border agent and he is now admitted ALL EXPENSES PAID.

Even worse is that in Quebec the "waiting" RCMP will actively help you to get away from the "evil" Americans.

Just imagine the mental gymnastics at work here - to cross the border at a point other than an official crossing is illegal but once in the country the person is allowed to make a refugee claim.  The RCMP is helping these people to commit an illegal act and somehow that just disappears the instant the person actually crosses.  The American border patrol is trying to prevent the illegals from crossing the border - trying to prevent them from breaking the Canadian law while the RCMP is helping them across and then ignoring the fact that they crossed illegally.

After seeing Canada's response, instead of keeping the illegals to themselves, we should probably expect the US to start sending busloads of illegals our way.

It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that while the Mounties are distracting themselves assisting families to cross illegally, the bad guys are probably walking right around the fools and into our Country.

I think the "bad guys" know or are being coached that they can just cross, apply as a refugee, live free and easy until their hearing date and if they are denied status as a refugee they can just move to a "sanctuary" such as Montreal or Vancouver or London or Hamilton and continue receiving benefits and social assistance while ignoring the deportation order.

How many countries have these people landed in before "choosing" Canada?? Not really the definition of safe haven.

And cynically, how many is enough? It seems the NDP want an open door. France, Germany, Sweden...they probably would like to re-visit the past.

Looks like we need a fence as once on Canadian soil our laws kick in and we are stuck with the results. Or at the very least invest in more manpower to prevent them from crossing.  We are seeing increasing numbers in the dead of winter, just imagine what we will see when it gets warmer. The new policy from the Trump government will likely increase the flow. Note the emphasis on illegal immigrants who have committed a crime.

The Department of Homeland Security issued new memos on Tuesday that give U.S. officials sweeping latitude to target removable aliens for deportation, effectively making  most of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. as priority targets.

The memos, issued by Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly, enforce executive orders issued by Trump shortly after taking office. Obama administration policies previously directed immigration officials to focus on convicted criminals instead of the broader undocumented population. Kellys memos instruct agents to also prioritize undocumented immigrants who have been charged with a crime but not convicted of it, or committed an act that may be criminal offenses but havent been charged for it. Those categories mean that almost any brush with the American law-enforcement system could make an undocumented immigrant a target for removal.

The memo also prioritizes those who engaged in fraud or willful misrepresentation in connection with any official matter before a governmental agency or abused a public-benefit program. That could include undocumented immigrants who use fake Social Security numbers to obtain employment, for example. Finally, the memo includes a catch-all category authorizing immigration officials to remove anyone who they believe to pose a risk to public safety or national security.

Neither of the memos alter U.S. immigration laws. Instead, they rely on the broad discretion granted to immigration officials by federal statutes to redirect limited resources towards specific enforcement priorities. Under the Obama administration, those priorities typically focused on undocumented immigrants who committed serious crimes. Tuesdays memos instead give U.S. immigration officials far broader latitude on who can be targeted and why.

To help implement the new policies, Kelly also formally authorized Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hire 10,000 new officials. A second memo signed by Kelly on Tuesday that focuses on operations along the U.S. border ordered the hiring of 5,000 new Customs and Border Protection Agents. Those positions would be exempt from the general hiring freeze imposed by Trump in his initial wave of executive orders.
