An Air Canada pilot is being credited with saving a dog’s life by diverting a flight from Tel Aviv to Toronto after a heating system malfunction in the plane’s cargo area.

The seven-year-old French bulldog named Simba was taking its first flight when the pilot noticed the problem just as the plane was about to head over the Atlantic Ocean, where temperatures plummet.

With the dog’s well-being in peril the pilot decided to land the plane in Frankfurt, Germany.

Simba was placed on another flight and the plane continued on to Toronto.

The dog’s owner was more than grateful.

“It’s my dog, it’s like my child. It’s everything to me,” he said after they were reunited at Pearson Airport.

Aviation expert Phyl Durby said the pilot made the right call, despite tacking on about $10,000 in fuel costs and delaying the flight by 75 minutes.

“If you look at the outside temperature, if it’s minus 50 or 60, there is some insulation but it will probably still get down to below freezing (in the cargo area),” Durby said.

“The captain is responsible for all lives on board, whether it’s human or K-9.”

Whatever the cost, the value of the favorable publicity far exceeds it. A Google search shows this story has been used extensively, across North America. People like good news pet stories.

For example

Yeah, but AC didn't even retweet any of the tweets on it or put it on their facebook page.

Talk about missing (another) opportunity to get some brownie points.

First class command decision.

moeman, you're absolutely right - AC doesn't seek publicity either way - it runs its business "from inside", so to speak. I think a lot of us would prefer that it recognize itself sometimes, but I've never known any of the leaderships I've worked under to do so, even with the Dreams-take-flight program. Success, just-a-day-in-the-life or problems, AC just continues its work. And its changed over the decades since I joined - I think it does a great internal job of recognizing employees when/where it counts.

With reference to the story, it's a good one, but I didn't know that temperatures "plummet" over the Atlantic... ;-)

From what I've seen, every time AC does put something positive on social media, a crowd of trolling haters will pile on and bring up the one bad experience their Uncle Joe had thirty five years ago. I can't say I blame them, why bother.

Can't blame them, why? Those who dwell in the past are doomed to repeat their mistakes. AC and their staff do many more good things than they do bad.

I read it as can't blame ACA for not tooting their own horn.

Generally speaking, AC doesn't toot it's own horn. It doesn't go around shouting "Look at what we did! Aren't we the greatest?". It usually allows this kind of publicity to happen organically.

Really...? Seems they do a pretty good job of it with a lot of focus on "favorable publicity" as opposed to saving lives as a matter of course!

Did you not see the words "why bother"? In the context of what I said, how could that apply to anyone but AC? Sheesh man.

Morning Jeff..........

I do believe there is room for misinterpretation of what you wrote. .and I, for one, also wondered about your statement (above)

Initially "I can't say I blame them" appears to refer to the "crowd of trolling haters" and "why bother" could be construed as a remark to the "crowd of trolling haters".

Given your neutrality toward any airline and after considering what you posted, I can see that you were referring to AC and the fact that "why bother" refers to their reluctance to wave the flag when they given a public "atta-boy" :biggrin1:

It's all fun on a forum when one is using grammar, tone, and syntax as well as mini sound, in this case.... written, bites :biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:
