Jim is well aware the contract lift model for LCC's doesn't work, but if he's smart, he'll keep at least 60 days of rolling deposits for the flights operated and NEVER let these jokers get in arrears, which they will.

He'll take their money, with a nice 10% point margin as long as it's proffered.

New Leaf are too dumb /naive to understand that the LCC game is dependent on recapturing margin everywhere. Like every other start up wannabe, they are going to do things "their way" because they are far more clever than anyone else.

They've just given their margin away in order to be first to market. Even Jetlines wasn't that stupid.

They haven't even figured out that perhaps it might be better to stick to their knitting before delving into side businesses.

Anyone who invests in the scheme deserves to lose it all.....and they will.

NewLeaf to announce ultra low cost airline in YHM

Travel company NewLeaf Travel is set to announce its promised new "ultra low cost" airline in Hamilton Wednesday.

According to a press release, the company plans to share information about pricing, booking details and non-stop routes at the John C. Munro Hamilton Airport at 11 a.m.

The launch will come months after initially planned, as NewLeaf had hoped to be operational by last summer. It missed the travel season while it was getting off the ground.

"The idea is that we are trying to lower the airfares," airline head Jim Young told CBC News back in April. "We're focusing on secondary airports. We don't like high-cost airports like Vancouver, Calgary, (Toronto) Pearson." In the west, Young is aiming to fly into Abbotsford, B.C., instead of Vancouver International.

Young has said the company hopes to look like the budget Ryanair in Europe, or Spirit or Allegiant airlines in the United States.

The company will sell packages with hotels and rental cars to Canadian and U.S. holiday destinations. But it will also hope to fill a low-cost flight niche for bare-bones customers looking for "a seat and a seatbelt" for casual travel.

These kinds of carriers typically have fewer daily flights, as well as no bonuses like in flight entertainment or frequent flyer points.

The company is partnering with Kelowna, B.C.-based Flair Airlines, a private charter airline, for aircraft, maintenance and crews. Rather than buying planes from scratch, partnering with Flair will cut out some of the operational hurdles to getting a new airline off the ground, Young said previously.

When reached Monday, a company representative said all details on flight destinations and prices are being saved for Wednesday's press conference.

Passenger numbers at Hamilton's airport have been dropping for years. For years the bulk of its traffic has been cargo rather than passenger.

"Strategically we see Hamilton International as an Airport well suited to an ultra-low cost carrier model, and would welcome New Leaf Travel Co. or any other low cost carrier to Hamilton Airport when looking to enter southern Ontario," airport marketing director Lauren Yaksich said in April.

Air Canada delayed the launch of its similar "rouge" flights between Hamilton and Calgary after a plane crash in Halifax last March threw off the company's fleet numbers.

http://www.thestar.com/business/2016/01/06/discount-airline-offers-99-flights-from-hamilton.html

Starting Feb 12

Kelowna planes. Will initially serve Abbotsford, Kelowna, Regina, Saskatoon,Winnipeg, Hamilton and Halifax.

Prices start at 99-119 one way, One personal bag allowed, but regulation carry-on fee will be $25-80, depending on whether fee is booked online in advance, or at airport. That's also each way.

Service is less than daily, but I can't access the online booking engine to provide examples, which seems to be offline (as opposed to overloaded).

I had a most embarrassing moment some years ago while under contract at a British low-cost carrier. I was taking a 757 from Gatwick to somewhere in the sun - Canaries or The Med - can't remember which.

The flight plan told us we were taking ~150 passengers. It was usually accurate. We loaded fuel appropriately. When we got our load sheet with 233 passengers, we were stuck with a delay in either defueling, removing baggage or both.

Ever tried to defuel an airliner at a major airport? Virtually impossible. So, yup, off came the majority of the bags and we became legal.

Bags went down on a separate flight. Passengers were very understanding. I went into the flight ops the next day, threw myself on my sword in apologies and nothing ever came of it other than always getting a pax load update prior to boarding fuel.

Rookie mistake. I shoulda known better!

Second but earlier embarrassing moment: Jetstream 41 flight YHZ-YDF. Was taking a bunch of fishing tourists to The Rock. Couldn't get their gear in the baggage compartment of the PoS. When tourists informed (they'd come up from State's side), they got off the flight and went over to Air Nova.

Nice airplane, unless you're a passenger, a shipper, or a Canadian airline. :Furious:

At least we don't have to worry about that anymore! Rowe finally sold them to New Zealand, I think! :Clap-Hands::Clap-Hands:

Why do they call these outfits "Low Cost" when in fact they mean "Low Pay"??

Is Flair supplying their initial aircraft & crews?

Yes, the aircraft etc come from Flair. How are their pay rates?

Perhaps a wet lease with Flair and a "power by hour" deal?

I wish anyone involved the best of luck. Maybe this operation will force "the others" to lower some fares on the similar routes for awhile.

Flights between seven cities, less than daily to start with, fares from $89-119 and up, fees for everything except a purse or small personal item. Applying the ULCC formula.

http://www.thestar.com/business/2016/01/06/discount-airline-offers-99-flights-from-hamilton.html

NewLeaf Travel bills itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier, where passengers pay for a seat and seatbelt, to get “from here to there.” If they want extras, such as bringing a carry-on bag, priority boarding or seat selection, they’ll pay extra fees.

“We want to give the power back to the consumer on what they want to spend, what they want to pay for,” said Dean Dacko, NewLeaf Travel’s chief commercial officer, in an interview.

“We’ll offer a menu of services and items that they can choose to buy. Our goal is to get people to spend less, not more.”

Introductory fares from Hamilton to Halifax and Winnipeg start at $99 one way, including taxes and fees, $119 to Regina and Saskatoon, $149 to Kelowna. It is also flying to Abbotsford, B.C., from cities in the Prairies.

It begins service on Feb. 12, offering service only once or twice a week from Hamilton to the different cities.

Depending on demand, fares could be higher than the introductory rates, but Dacko insists prices will always be 20 to 40 per cent cheaper than rivals like Air Canada and WestJet Airlines.

NewLeaf passengers will pay for extra services, including beverages and snacks or booking a flight through the call centre. Every passenger can bring a small personal item for free, but it’s $25 for a carry-on bag or checked bag, if booked on the website, or $35 if done at the airport.

Seat selection is $10 for the rear of the plane, $15 for the front of the plane and $25 for an exit row, on the website. At the airport, it will be $15 for the rear, $20 for the front, and $30 for an exit row.

It will be interesting to see how customers react to the extra fees. If you've flown Spirit or the European discounters like Ryanair or EasyJet, you have a pretty good idea how this all works. But first timers who screw up on bag fees, or families that have to pay a seat selection fee per passenger per leg are going to be confronted with paying more than they had been anticipating, especially if they guess wrong on their needs before getting to the airport. I was last on EasyJet last month, and it's pretty easy to cram a few items of clothing into a small bag for a weekend in Lisbon. It's a two hour flight from Stuttgart. These kind of short stays are the bread and butter of a lot of EasyJet routes. In Canada, we don't have as much of that kind of volume. If you go for a week across country, you need at least a good size carry-on per passenger. Will be an interesting experiment to watch.

I've flown Ryanair twice. The second time my baggage fee was more than the airfare. Not really a fan of this formula and curious if Canadians will embrace it. Such a narrow band of population in this country and as per usual only one maritime city included.
