Cpal & Cai Aircraft. How Many Are Still In Ac Inventory.

Recommended Posts

Was reading my book about Canadian Pacific Air Lines. Very interesting history and even more with the number of types the airline flew especially during it's bush days. There's mention in the book of what happened to their older inventory but the book stops when CPAL was takeover by Pacific Western Air Lines to form Canadian Airlines International. This is done with a photo of a PWA 737 and a caption about the takeover.

Well now I've checked on the web and read up to the takeover of Canadian Airlines International by Air Canada. But I have no information on what happened to the CAI inventory that was absorbed into or sold off by Air Canada. Does anyone here know. I'd like to know what happened to their large fleet of 737's and DC-10's. Thanks to anyone who can help with some info.

This info is a little out of date but you might be able to trace recent history with the msn.
This list was from:

http://canadianaviationnews.wordpress.com/air-canada-fleets-2/

I think the a couple of the 10's were operated by Biman Airlines [bangladesh] for a while but most were scrapped.

I'm sure Mitch or Kip will be able to provide more detail.

Thank you st27. I do hope Mitch or Kip will be able to add more details. I remember once seeing an old non airworthy Vickers Viscount in the red and white Air Canada livery before it went to who knows where. I'll cross reference the 737 list with the one in my book. So the DC-10's were used briefly by Air Canada before being sold off and scrapped? I've found it nice to see the history of these birds beyond what is written in the book. :checkmark:

I'm sorry but I have no idea where any aircraft went. I loved the Truckasaurus Rex but when I took off my spurs and hung up my cape, I stored all my unforgettable, (to me), memories of aviation in my grey matter, wrote a few stories, and moved on to spending the remaining time here on planet earth doing what She and I could finally do together...boating , scuba, family and grandchildren :biggrin1::checkmark:

Can not do the scuba anymore so my rankings have changed a little: Doing things with my best friend (wife), family and grandchildren, volunteering and cruising.

Sorry to say I can't add anything much either... I'm not a tracker sort.

AC never did use the DC10's ....sadly, they were all spirited away from us as the papers were shuffled... I think Maverick, being in YVR might have more direct knowledge of their disposal, but in YYZ, all I knew was I never saw them anymore.

In addition to the 37s, 320s, and 67s, we brought with us at least one 747-400... but something in my noggin says there might have been 3 of them?

There were 4 747-400s with GE engines from CAI - The 3 AC versions were Combis with PW 4000s.

We also have some A320s still in operation 401-405, 408, and 411-416.

552 and 562 were both -9 powered gravel combi's but have now both since been retired from Cdn North. One of them was north of 85000 cycles I believe....

582/583/584 are -17 powered gravel combi's that are still in service with Cdn North and will be for awhile as I understand it.

4 or 5 of the CAIL DC-10's went to Abbotsford after their logos were taken off and sat for 3 or 4 months before heading to airplane heaven. That was early-mid 1999 if I recall correctly?

One or two went to Biman but I think the rest never went back into service. I have pictures somewhere that I'll try to post later.
