Maintenance Wages

AME

Recommended Posts

One company in YYC (not WS) recently rolled out a new payscale that is suppose to attract and help retain staff, a dual endorsed AME now tops out around $44/hr up from approx $33/hr, there are premiums for crew chief, QA etc.. the main driver behind the increase is the shortage of qualified people here. It's not quite to where it should be but it's going in the right direction. :)

This was bound to start happening sooner than later.

Look at the AVEOS guys, the majority of the licensed guys all found jobs in YUL, some went to AVIONOR and now Bombardier is hiring for the C series and the guys are going there.

AC is going to find itself up the creek in short order with their refusal to pay the going rate. It is estimated that YYZ could lose close to 100 guys in the next 12 months, that is 12 multi endorsed guys!!!!! If that happens at one station, you may as well close the doors. Here in YOW, we could lose 25% of the AME's next year and with companies like first air paying a MUCH higher wage, it will be very difficult to find backfills.

I hear Avionor is paying $38 per hour in Mirabel.

$40 and they are having a difficult time as there is NO benefits, plus Bombardier is hiring a large number and the wage is the same plus benefits

I think it's healthy that AME's move from one company to the other, problem is that some AME's are in a defined benefit pension plan which is by far better than any of the benefits that you will find out in the industry however, it restricts their movement.

Precisely. In another thread, Mr. Lupin refers to this as "the Golden Noose".

Transfer your DB plan into a locked in plan somewhere and get out. Having a DB plan at a company that doesnt exits while you are on the unemployment line is a bit of a false sense of security. So you ogo somewhere and start contributing to a DC plan and take some responsibility for your own retirement. Whats more important? your happiness for the next 10 -25 years or your retirement that last 6 months before you croak from stress related illness?

Personally I thing the "golden Noose" is what will eventually hang you outright. Get while the getting is good and live happy.
