Recommended Posts

You may have not heard of it just yet since its still in its infancy, but new content will be posted regularly and I know the people behind it are working very hard at it.

So if you care about the Canadian pilot profession, I invite you to visit the site and register.

Thank you!

Having taken advantage of contracts in many parts of the world, many times at the objection of local pilot groups, I have a hard time supporting this initiative.

I think you would agree that those contracts are available only because there is no supply of qualified "local" pilots available to fill those positions. That is not the case here and I fail to understand why we have abandoned the one-for-one formula that was in use in the past.

True. And I do take issue with Canadian operators who say "there are no qualified pilots - we have to bring them in from away". The owner of City Express started this ball rolling in the 1980's and he was never called on it then. After 30 years, the "abnormal" has become the "normal", to steal from Don H's prase book. Since I've been out of that world for 4 years now, I must claim ignorance of the current situation so I think I'll just remove my previous post. It will live on in posterity though! ;)

I believe CALPA launched a protest against Victor after he brought a Dash 7 into YTZ crewed by foreign pilots. When the Dash 8's started arriving in 1985 it was only Canadians getting those jobs.

Sunwing's probably 70% foreign pilots, F/A's too and the joke is on Canadians. Does Canada even need a Sunwing type of operation? Can't the other airlines that employee Canadians provide the lift?

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the intention of forming such a coalition/college?

The simplistic answer is for the same reason Laywers have a Bar association, and Accountants have their own association. Self regulating, holding it's members to a standard. Can't get a job unless you're a part of the organization, among other things...

Some of us believed CALPA was their personal club whose purpose was to serve as a 'control' on the growth etc of all other member carriers.

That group now goes it alone in isolation.

Can you name the group?

Pending an official mission statement release, I will say that the first intent of this Coalition is to protect and promote the employment of Canadian Airline Pilots on all Canadian registered aircrafts, for starters, thus limiting or altogether banning the use of foreign pilots until all qualifiable (not qualified, which is the wording some companies use to justify to MHR that there's no available candidates for the job posted) Canadian is rightfully employed, just like the way it's done in the US and in Europe. It could also eventually develop into what Miles said although there is a College of Pilots being worked on right now...

Canada is the only member of the G8 where this practice is allowed...time to wake up!
