Sunwing flight attendants join CUPE

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 12, 2012) - Flight attendants with Sunwing airlines have joined Canada's largest union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees. The 700 flight attendants voted to join CUPE in a vote conducted by the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

"We welcome the flight attendants from Sunwing to the CUPE family," said Paul Moist, national president of CUPE. "Flight attendants, like all workers, want to have decent paying jobs with rock solid health and safety provisions. At CUPE our track record defending workers speaks for itself and we look forward to representing Sunwing flight attendants," said Moist.

CUPE is Canada's largest airline union. With workers from Sunwing, CUPE now represents nearly 10,000 flight attendants at both large and smaller air carriers including: Air Canada, Air Transat, CanJet, First Air, Cathay Pacific, CALM Air, Canadian North, and the ground agents at Porter Airlines in Ottawa.

"In tough economic times, more and more workers see the benefit of joining CUPE," said Moist. "Flight attendants deserve basic rights such as proper crew rest, time off and respectable duty periods. We look forward to working with flight attendants to achieve these and other rights."
