The Harper government misinformed Parliament to win approval for a $50-million G8 fund that lavished money on dubious projects in a Conservative riding, the Auditor-General has concluded.

And she suggests the process by which the funding was approved may have been illegal.

The findings are contained in a confidential report Sheila Fraser was to have tabled in Parliament on April 5. The report analyzed the $1-billion cost of staging last June's G8 summit in Ontario cottage country and a subsequent gathering of G20 leaders in downtown Toronto.

OK the government lied....So what else is new? Red, blue, orange, or green they ALL lie. I have yet to see a party that hasn't cheated the Canadian taxpayer in one way or another. Look at McGuilty in Ontario Raping his constituancy. Look at the Former Liberal Feds, the current conservatives, the former conservatives, the former Liberals....DEEP BREATH. If you find any politicians that are incapable of lying ELECT THEM. At least you would know where you stood.

The problem is that we have these audits and we find issues but noone is held accountable. Once upon a time you would have been escorted to the Gallows for infractions such as this but nothing will happen. the people at fault will likely resign with a full government pension if even that.

We the People should be able to lynch those that would seek to profit from bad practices in government.

Frankly there is not one good choice on that ballot.

Interesting lines.....so much for transparency

It was put on ice when the Harper government was defeated and is not due to be released until after the May 2 election.

However, a Jan. 13 draft of the chapter on the G8 legacy infrastructure fund was obtained by a supporter of an opposition party and shown to The Canadian Press.

Among the questionable projects funded were:

» $274,000 on public toilets 20 kilometres from the summit site.

» $100,000 on a gazebo an hour's drive away.

» $1.1-million for sidewalk and tree upgrades 100 kilometres away.

» $194,000 for a park 100 kilometres away.

» $745,000 on downtown improvements for three towns nearly 70 kilometres away.

I know the area pretty well and, to be perfectly honest, considering the world press in attendance at the summits do not believe it would be much of a stretch to justify those particular expenses.

You are kidding...right ???

So you think the government is justified in spending over 2 million to ensure the "Press" doesn't label us as "have-nots" or that they may think we are a bunch of buffoons living in the sticks ???? In effect you are stating that the impression the Press has of the their surroundings is of such importance that we can pi$$ away 2 million for a weeks worth of "gawking".

As far as the Press goes, I picked up a Federal parties 737 half way through a election campaign one year and was disgusted in the way the Press abused the interior of that aircraft...they should have been made to pay for the refurbing of the aircraft.

I think we could have really impressed the Press by putting them in tents and giving each of them a canister of Bear Spray..... ...us Canucks are tough.....and pleasant.

Actually no. We had to take a roundabout way to get to our place in the woods up there so the summit was darn inconvenient from a personal pov but for those 5 specific examples cited in the article, I can imagine exactly where they are and probably agree that if several thousand (literally) foreign correspondents were to descend on the place and would be sending pictures and stories home from there, I would want the place gussied up. Tourism is big business in Huntsville, Muskoka and environs, even in winter, and the summeit was a chance for promoting more of it. $2 million for those capital expenditure fix ups was chump change for the long term tourism economy of the area.

As for the rest of the expenses, whatever they were, I don't know the specifics and didn't comment on them.
