FireFox
Un bloody believable;Dozens of angry Asian residents of a posh, University of B.C., highrise building aim to stage a placard-waving protest rally to protest a 15-bed hospice being planned next door.“We cannot have dying people in our backyard,” said rally organizer Janet Fan, Wednesday “It’s a cultural taboo to us and we cannot be close to so many dying people. It’s like you open your door and step into a graveyard.”Fan lives on the 17th floor at Promontory, at 2688 West Mall, near Thunderbird Stadium. She said residents weren’t consulted and only found out when an open house on the proposed hospice was scheduled for Monday.UBC planners are planning to build St. John Hospice next door.“Next week we’re going to organize a march, holding banners, to the office of the president of UBC,” said Fan, a stay-at-home mom. “We’re going to tell him we don’t want this hospice and how enraged, angry and shocked we are.”Fan said 80 per cent of the residents of her 18-storey building are Asian and are strongly opposed.“Units here are worth $1 million,” she added. “We put our life savings into this.”Read more: http://www.theprovince.com/business/Angry+Asian+condo+owners+protest+luck+hospice/4100264/story.html#ixzz1AxyJ0zZC

Gumbi
I think I know why but let me ask you, why so unbelievable?Probably the same reason why Dire Strait's "Money for Nothing" has been banned from Canadian airwaves after 25 years of radio play.... Unbelievable!!!
Leading Edge
Welcome to Canada. If you don't like our values, leave.Who gave you the right to speak for "Canada"??These people have every right to protest, that is part of a "free society". When did we stop allowing protest, and freedom of speech?Personally, I agree with them. How would you feel if this hospice was next to you property? How would you feel losing a couple of hundred thousand $$ worth of value or more? Why is it in Canada, it is ok to rip off someone who has worked hard to accumulate some wealth? Why do we feel like it is our socialist right to steal other peoples wealth either directly or indirectly? There are a ton of other more suitable locations for this building, perhaps closer to a hospital? Why was this site chosen?Something to think about...LE

Why was this site chosen?Something to think about...LEIt is close to a hospital, and evidently a long term care facility.“The proposed UBC site was selected after a four-year process that reviewed 12 possible sites that the university identified,” said Peter Hebb, Vancouver spokesman for the Order of St. John. “It is the best one suitable for hospice uses that can link with the Faculty of Medicine’s academic and research component in the field of palliative care.”Read more: http://www.theprovince.com/health/Proposed+hospice+best+possible+site+said+charity/4105663/story.html#ixzz1B3QiMa00It's a 15 bed hospice, not a half-way house for recovering crack addicts.A lot of the people that would be using it have probably lived and raised families in the area for decades & should be shown a lot more respect than what is being displayed by this condo group who are worried about "ghosts flying into my window".I agree with props. If they don't like it they can leave.I hope UBC doesn't cave on the issue.
Mitch Cronin
“We cannot have dying people in our backyard,”I've got a real big problem with that line of crap..... Anyone who seriously thinks that way needs to get off this planet then, because it's full of people dying in our backyards! .... and lots of them are dying because of people who don't give a rats ass, like those who'd say **bleep** like that. ....This is Canada... In Canada we do give a damn.... We look after people... I agree with the "if you don't like our ways, then leave!" crowd.

Your rationale actually came about after thought? Nice to see where you stand on providing end of life care vs. a bunch of ignorant whiners. You should have seen the woman on TV, going on about ghosts coming to get her and her family because of this. Nice to see we have such high immigration standards - I guess as long as you can bring in 1/4 million to buy your citizenship, intelligence isn't required. Moon The Loon
“It is all about cultural sensitivity,” said Ms. Fan, a Chinese-born immigrant who lives in a high-rise near the proposed hospice site. “We came here as new immigrants with our own belief system. And in our beliefs, it is impossible for us to have dying people in our backyard.” That "belief system" should not have followed them to Canada. Immigrants need to understand they must leave their prejudices in the country they abandon, and respect the cultural practices of the country that adopts them. A secular country. The hospice location was determined through democratic process. Death is a part of life. These people are concerned with property values and are invoking millenia-old superstitions from a place they ran away from in order to back their argument.Shame on them. J.O.
Imagine how it would go if we were to go to their country and organize a protest against their policy of limiting how many children a family can have.
