J.O.
I guess it makes sense that they were forced to put it on the ground to sort it out all out, but what a costly and embarrassing mistake!
HHI
I'm so glad that this sort of thing only happened to other people.Pilot's spilt coffee behind Toronto emergency landing.http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20110104/pilot-coffee-110104/Greg, I came close to being one of those "other" people on Jan 4th.Pacific ocean, night, had just exited an area bordering on moderate turbulence with some pretty good bumps.Held my crew water container on my left knee and opened it for the first time that night. Was immediately drenched by a geyser of water. The water hit the EFB on my left side, the bottom of the PFD and the ND in front of me and a few drops on the VHF control panel to my right as well as my shirt and the contents of my briefcase to my left.As soon as the shock wore off I secured the cap and mopped up as fast and as best as we could. The water container held carbonated water. I discussed the issue with the cabin crew member who had brought the water to the flight deck. He had noticed that one container was different from the other crew water containers but wasn't aware that one was carbonated and I don't think think he grasped the seriousness of what could have happened. When I returned home I read the details of the Delta diversion.I'm taking steps to circulate this info internally via our company safety department. You can bet I'll be having a close look at labels on water containers supplied to my flight deck in future. Henry
J.O.
Henry,It's interesting (and a little freaky) but when I read the Delta story it made me think of the possibility of a bottle of carbonated water accidentally getting onto the flight deck. It's likely because I had one geyser on me over Christmas. At the time I decided that it probably couldn't happen. Your story proves, yet again, that in our business, never say "it can't happen".
