Netflix?

I turned on the PS3 one day last month or so and there was a Netflix icon. I pressed it and they invited me for a one month trial. I set up the account and in minutes we were checking out the content. I've got a housefull of kids and the selection for kids movies and tv wasn't too bad, but the top requests for Star Wars etc. were not fulfilled. There is a lot of 'B' content on there right now and they say they are continually adding new stuff...tough to say whether we noticed that or not. I was really impressed with the streaming technology they were using. We were using the PS3 which has a garden variety WiFi connection with my hohum router from Telus. As long as no one jumped on any of the other computers in the house, the movies always played uninterrupted and the picture quality was excellent. I didn't test it enough to notice if there was 5.1 surround option. All the content we looked at the sound was Dolby Digital - stereo. The other neat thing is that if you stop the show and come back days later, it remembers where you left off and you are up and running again with no fuss! After 30 days I cancelled the account as we have all sorts of other options for streaming or downloading (PS3, iTunes etc) and the content on Netflix right now is quite limited for our tastes. I would definitely encourage you to do the 30 day trial as what they have on there might be to your liking and at $8 a month, it is a good value.

My son bought me an Apple TV for Christmas and I have signed up for the free subscription. So far so good, the selection is not as extensive as that available in the US and the choices are somewhat dated. If you are looking for something with new releases, the stuff that is in video stores, then Netflix is not going to work for you.

I have found plenty of stuff to watch and the quality is equivalent to other broadcast signals on my tv. For $7.99 a month it is the price of 1 BluRay rental and the I think I will get my monies worth out of it on an ongoing basis.

Good point moeman. I never thought about data limitations with the provider. I am going to see how much I have with Telus... I have 75 GB a month and so far have not come near that limit, but the family isn't streaming much.

Hey what a deal, you've got Blu-Ray and at a good price! At the marina near our family cottage, they're still working with VHS! Scratch-Head.gif

Yeah, like my nephew came over the other day and asked "What's that round thing do?" I told him it was a record player. "Yeah, OK. What's a record?"

Note to self - getting old sucks. :Clever:

I just sold 145 LPs for $20.00...........

I have 6 boxed sets of albums going on Kijij this week for $20.00

Just taking up space...downsizing...will never listen to them

It's not getting old, it's downsizing so when I have that final "dirt-nap" the kids don't have to say "What the hell are we gonna do with all these vinyl things?"wink.gif

I've been doing Netflix for a few months and I love it. Most of the movies are older but there more than enough to keep me signed up. Here's what we've watched in the last two months:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, Dune, Taxi Driver, The World's Fastest Indian, Mad Max, Call of the Wild, Who Killed the Electric Car, Two Brother and a Bride, Akeelah and the Bee, The Little Princess, The Blue Butterfly, Born Free, Bulletproof Monk, Deconstructing Supper, Rumble in the Bronx, Ripping Yarns, Von Ryan's Express, Black Adder season 1, Three Days of the Condor, Runaway Train, Slaughthouse Five, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Tommy, Heavy Metal, Andromeda Strain, 1984, City of Ember along with several other documentaries and various children and family shows.

I think it's excellent value. The interface is very easy to use. I can watch from the PS3 at home or from the laptop on the road and Netflix tracks where each movie is stopped or started across either viewing platform; watch some from one and seamlessly start viewing from the other later. The biggest benefit is that if you find yourself watching something that you don't enjoy you can just stop and watch something else instead - you aren't stuck watching it because it's all you brought from the video store (or from the library, which is what we did a lot before Netflix). Also I find that I have been surprised with several movies that I had never heard of before - I chose to watch them because there was no cost or effort to do so and really enjoyed them - if I had seen them on the shelf of the video store I probably wouldn't have taken the chance and would have missed out on a good experience.

Great thread, I've wondered about Netflix and I appreciate the info, I may subscribe. Since getting Apple TV a few years back we have watched very little cable TV. I can't stand commercials and watching ala carte' and on demand for the few shows we watch is nice in this industry. You don't have to worry about PVR times or missing an episode when you lose track. I've also ripped most of the kids DVD's and thrown them in a box now so they don't get damaged. My latest plan is to ditch cable since it usually only gets tuned in to the news or a few kids cartoons in the morning for less than an hour usually. With that I've ordered one of these:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10901

All TV's in our house are newer Sony Bravia's with HD tuners. I was able to tune in 22 channels and most of the HD was clearer than the cable service. I'm not sure how long the antenna service will last but for now its excellent quality and lets me get great reception for CBC and CTV, taking care of the Hockey and News. I just find for the price, cable has absolutely no value... so once the additonal antenna's arrive next week I'll install them and call the cable company to quit the service.

Do the HD antenna work outside of metro areas????? If you are on one of the old fashioned TV antenna at the side of the house will it still pick up the signals?? Sounds pretty interesting!!!and free :)

I think you need to be in a good population like the GTA, Montreal, or GVRD. All are close to American borders and will bring in US channels as well. Originally I hooked the antenna up to an older TV in the summer, and it only brought in a few channels. I thought the project was a failure. Then on boxing day I was hooking up a new Sony Bravia, 40 inch (that I stole for 499$ on sale), it went throug the cable programming and followed with this question "If you have an HD Antenna select to program now". I hooked up the antenna (that I originally thought was useless) and it then brought in several, crystal clear channels. That's what brought on the second order from monoprice, that I've placed a few days ago.

Monoprice is an awesome website to buy from. Cheap prices and they have several reviews with each product. You can actually go in to the reviews of each antenna and see what people have said about their area and how many channels. Sometimes each one. I plan on wiring the two upstairs TV (one in the bathroom and one in the bedroom) up two previously installed wire chases, and then mounting those antennas in the attic. The lower family room antenna will be done the same way and the den is our 'cartoon TV', I'll place that one as an indoor and I'm hoping it will get PBS which is the channel of choice for the two munchkins. Add in Netflix eventually and I think I'll have enough entertainment for 'pilot pricing'

I will update on how my signal is when I receive these. My good buddy from AC is showing up with his family next week and I'm sure after a few cocktails he won't mind crawling around in the attic for this project!

I signed up for Netflix when it first came to Canada and have been very pleased. Two TV's on PS3's and one on Wii.

Full access (no extra charge) via computer, which is a nice bonus in hotel rooms on your laptop plus as more A/C get WiFi you will be able to watch movies onboard.

There is some discussion about signing up for US Netflix verse Canadian?

A good resource to see what is new:

Great value for $8/month.

Yes, the old fashioned TV antenna should work. HD antenna is more of a marketing trick. You do need an HD receiver either built into your newer TV or a separate receiver for older TV's.
