Aerion Corporation Supersonic Business Jet

From the Aerion Corporation website:

In the near future, it will be possible to take off from Paris at 8 a.m. for a breakfast meeting in Manhattan. One will be able to fly from the East Coast of North America to Asia in just 9 1/2 hours.

It will be possible to traverse the United States at Mach .98 with operating costs equivalent to today's large business jets. Access to airports where most business jets currently operate will remain available and all noise and emissions regulations will be met.

A new approach to supersonic design makes all this possible. It is like nothing that has come before, but may well herald the shape of business travel for decades into the future.

It is the Aerion Supersonic Business Jet. Welcome aboard.

Really?..Do business execs really need this? What with SAT phones/video conferencing, etc.Scratch-Head.gif

Let's see now...4000 nm will cost @ 10.00/nm(operating cost as per video) $ 40,000.00 so a round trip will cost $80,000.00. That's a lot of 1st class/business class tickets.

The only thing/reason I can see for spending that much for a flight would be the threat of "pending death"....however...if they build it, they will come, whistling.gif (those that want the status and have the big bucks )....good luck !!glare.gif

If you Google some of the more extravagant private "yachts" (A.K.A. cruise ships) that some wealthy folks own, you'll soon see that there is plenty of money out there to buy these aircraft. It may not be a large one, but there will be a market.

An engine is an engine. so long as it moves the air that air can be accelerated and decelerated as required by a good efficient Nacelle design. So long as the airflow THROUGH the engine is maintained below Mach 1 the engine itself can be moving much faster.

As was stated in another thread a DC-8 can do it. Actually quite possibly any airliner today is CAPABLE of doing it but its not a good idea.

The inlet cowl on ALL Jet aircraft is designed to slow the airflow down before it hits the fan and accelerate it AFTER it leaves the final stage turbine. So a JT8-217 enclosed in a good design nacelle would work fine.

BTW the -217 Variant of the engine was introcuced in the 80's and was the engine on the MD80 line of aircraft.

Suffice it to say, USD 1,500 bought me a joyride on Speedbird One LHR-JFK once upon a time! icon_super.gif

Thanks to all you tax payers I did it a few times, one of the most memorable was many years ago at M1.9 /( approx 1380mph) duly noted in my log book. The entire mission lasted a whole 45 minutes, of which 10 minutes was above M1.

In reality there is little to impress one at high altitude when one does go supersonic but M0.95 low level............well that is another storybiggrin2.gif
