Air Canada (AC.B-T3.560.133.79%) will be imposing a $20 one-way fee on consumers who check a second bag on domestic flights, matching a move by rival WestJet Airlines Ltd. (WJA-T12.88-0.12-0.92%)

The new Air Canada charge will apply to flights on or after Jan. 19, on economy-class bookings made starting Thursday.

Was there ever any doubt?

It'll be interesting to see who leads the fuel surcharge / fare increases and how long it takes for the other to match should $90+ oil prices force the airlines hand down the road.

Compared to what the so called "low fares airlines" charge for a comparable bag allowance in the UK, this is truly peanuts. Most people would be stunned what Ryanair / EasyJet would charge for 2 bags with 18kgs each in them.

I am, however, reminded of a B side of one of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap's first charting singles.

No doubt whatsoever. Both airlines want the revenue. Considering the US carriers have a first checked bag fee domestically, I'd say that's where we're headed, as part of partner/code share harmonization. We'll likely see a fee per bag of $25.
