If my recollection of HKG airport is correct:

He had already been through at least two identity checks before clearing security so he went through with legitimate documents at some point. I cannot recall if anyone is required to show identification at the boarding point.

Besides, he was security cleared I would think and that is all that matters.

I believe HKG airport handles all passenger processing for AC pre-security. There are AC personnel at check-in supervising them, and again at the gate, but if the guy had legit docs to get as far as the secure part of the airport, then this might have worked. I just don't see how another passenger got on board with an Aeroplan card - everyone has to have a seat assigned.
