Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom: Moore, Patrick: 9798568595502: Books - Amazon.ca

"“It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are either invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs. Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists – all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject – to tell them the truth. This is my effort, after 50 years as a scientist and environmental activist, to expose the misinformation and outright lies used to scare us and our children about the future of the Earth. Direct observation is the very basis of science. Without verified observation it is not possible to know the truth. That is the sharp focus of this book.”

Remember the first big wave of the man-made global warming. Time to fact check:

"

Fact-checking claims that Al Gore said all Arctic ice will be gone in the summer by 2013

IF YOUR TIME IS SHORT

  • In 2009, Al Gore loosely cited researchers and said there was a “75% chance” the ice could be gone during at least some summer months within five to seven years.

  • He made similar statements multiple other times in the late 2000s.

Former Vice President Al Gore has been a vocal advocate for policies to reduce global warming, dedicating much of his post-White House work to the cause — and encountering a fair amount of ridicule along the way.

Now some social media users are sharing posts that claim Gore wrongly predicted in the late 2000s that all the Arctic ice would be melted in the summer by 2013.

"The North Pole will be ice-free in the summer by 2013 because of man-made global warming. Al Gore, 2009," one Facebook post says. A photo below the quote shows a man covered in ice, with more in the background, and text that says, "2021 nope it’s still cold!"

Gore didn’t say exactly this in 2009, but he made a similar statement.

The post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)

In a Dec. 14, 2009, speech at the Copenhagen Climate Conference, Gore suggested the possibility of the Arctic losing some or all of its ice in the summer months within five to seven years, citing researchers associated with the Naval Postgraduate School.

"Some of the models suggest to Dr. (Wieslav) Maslowski that there is a 75% chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years."

Gore attributed the prediction to researchers, but it appears he misstated the findings.

A day after the speech, Maslowski told the London Times that it was unclear "how this figure was arrived at … I would never try to estimate likelihood at anything as exact as this."

The article said that Gore’s office "later admitted that the 75% figure was one used by Dr. Maslowski as a ‘ballpark figure’ several years ago in a conversation with Mr. Gore."

Gore made similar statements about Arctic ice in his 2007 Nobel prize acceptance speech and, in 2008, a video of the opening of a German museum captured Gore saying that "the entire North polar ice cap may well be completely gone in five years."

In his Academy Award-winning 2006 documentary  "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore warned about the coming impact of climate change on the Arctic ice cap, but he said studies showed it would be gone in the summertime "within the next 50 to 70 years" — so by 2056 or 2076.

Our ruling

Posts claim Al Gore said in 2009 that the North Pole "will be ice-free in the summer by 2013 because of man-made global warming."

Gore said something similar. Citing researchers during a 2009 climate change conference, Gore  said there was a 75% chance that ice in the Arctic could be gone during at least some summer months within five to seven years. Reports indicate that he misrepresented the details of the research.

The post is accurate but needs additional information. We rate it Mostly True.

I guess I will have to make a choice on who's recent link to believe. That of a scientist and co-founder of Greenpeace or that of a baggage handler with a known socialist agenda.

It may take a while, I'll let you know when I come to my decision.

Sorry dude. You just lost all your credibility.

Funny how you don't say why. Maybe because you are a climate change alarmist. Your credibility on that front could be questioned if that Dash8 beside your handle represents how you make money.

Let’s not forget David Suzuki

“ Likely it won’t surprise many Calgarians to learn Suzuki, who has made an extremely good living berating the hoi polloi for their collective, wasteful lifestyles, let slip he’s owned a holiday apartment in Australia for years.

Now if we assume the 82-year-old doesn’t jump from the dock of one of his many B.C. homes and swim the Pacific Ocean to that Port Douglas abode in the Land Down Under, then the carbon footprint involved in a 26,000-kilometre return aircraft trip is staggering.

Just as staggering is the wilful hypocrisy of making such a well-heeled living courtesy of the whole environmental movement, despite being an individual chewing up far more resources than regular Canucks.

That’s what riles people. Regardless of whether you believe the planet’s warming is due to accumulated carbon dioxide or not — I lean that way, but then I once believed Pluto was a planet and the universe’s expansion was slowing because scientists told me such was so “

Thanks for the info:

"Then president Clinton’s campaign to battle global warming became popular, this gave Al Gore yet another avenue to pursue income streams. He became a prolific author, writing books on the global warming trends and the dangers of carbon emissions. This was a great success for him and he not only participated in efforts to combat global warming, he also invested in companies which specialized in green technology."

Nice to be able to have your buddies implement laws for you so your investments go way up. I guess it is only a bad thing to the frauds if they think Trump is doing that.

This was entertaining to read about the typical alarmist fraud:

" In 2007, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, using a public records request, published Gore’s Nashville home utility bill, showing it used almost 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006 — 20 times the national average household consumption. Gore’s people dismissed the revelation."

Just like the frauds dismiss all the other hypocrisy that they do.

How different electric vehicles perform in cold weather, according to one analysis

Megan DeLaire
Published Dec. 22, 2022 12:29 p.m. MST

Large swaths of Canada and the northern U.S. will be hit by energy-sapping cold weather this week.

Electronics, including cell phones, digital cameras and laptops, lose some of their power in cold temperatures, and the same can be said for electric vehicles (EVs). According to RecurrentAuto.com, some EVs can lose up to 160 kilometres or 35 per cent of their range in cold temperatures.

This happens for a few reasons, Recurrent's battery scientist Jon Witt said in a company blog post. One factor is the physical and chemical reactions in the battery slow down in cold temperatures, reducing an EV's power.

The other factor is that EVs need to work harder than those with internal combustion engines to heat themselves. Internal combustion engines produce a lot of extra heat that is wasted in the summer, but which can be re-directed to warm the cabin in the winter. EV motors are more efficient, and the little heat generated by the motor is used to warm the battery. Cabin heating, in turn, relies on power drawn from the battery, which further reduces the battery's charge.

On the flipside, lithium-ion batteries like those used in most EVs work so well in warm temperatures that they actually degrade more quickly. Temperature affects the rate of chemical reactions inside a battery; so the higher the temperature, the faster the reactions, the more energy produced, and the faster the degradation.

Not many Canadians need to worry about those warmer climes right now, with bitterly cold temperatures forecast across the country this week. However, it could be helpful to know how to get the most out of an EV's battery for the future, since Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault proposed new regulations on Wednesday that would make it mandatory for one-fifth of all passenger cars, SUVs and trucks sold in Canada in 2026 to run on electricity.

By 2030, that proportion will rise to 60 per cent of all sales. By 2035, every passenger vehicle sold in Canada will need to be electric. The purpose of the mandate is to ensure Canadians have better access to electric vehicles, Guilbeault's parliamentary secretary Julie Dabrusin said during Wednesday's announcement.

Here is how some of the most popular EV models perform in cold weather compared to the manufacturers' listed range, according to Recurrent.

Cable rumble: FOX rips CBS for claiming airplane turbulence caused by climate change

On Monday, CBS published a line on what causes turbulence after 11 people were injured on board a Hawaiian Airlines flight last Sunday, the UK’s Daily Mail has reported.

Taylor Garland, spokesperson for the Association of Flight Attendants, said turbulence is caused by severe weather and things are going to get worse because of climate change.

Dr. Nicole Saphier, a Fox News medical contributor, hit back at the Flight Attendants Association Union claims.

“I don’t think the spokesperson for the Flight Attendants Association Union should be the climate change czar. Turbulence happens all the time. It’s happened since we’ve invented flying. And thankfully, it’s actually gotten better because of the technology on the airplanes,” Saphier said, adding passengers should buckle up.

“I don’t think that we should just chalk this up to climate change and I think maybe people should just, you know, wear a seatbelt.”

Jimmy Failla, host of Fox Across America, questioned the data behind the claim.

The reason people fall for this garbage is because they want to sound empathetic and considerate. The only data we have to support climate change is that people are getting rich selling it to us, and none of the people making that money are adhering to any of the guidelines they’re forcing on us,’ Failla said.

I want to become a climate activist just so that I can fly on private jets. That’s the perk to me.”

CBS News was mocked on Twitter with many criticizing the the station for using the union’s statement as evidence.

One said, ‘I spilled my coffee this morning… due to climate change’ as others just simply said, ‘That’s called weather’.
