Oasis budget airline stops flying

Hundreds of passengers have been left stranded after the Hong Kong airline Oasis stopped flying and applied to go into liquidation.

Oasis first flew in October 2006, offering flights from London Gatwick to Hong Kong for as little as 1,000 Hong Kong dollars (£65) each way.

It later added flights from Hong Kong to Vancouver.

KPMG, appointed as liquidator, advised ticket holders to call 00852 3628 0628 or 0844 482 2323 for more information.

Fuel bills

Fellow Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific is to offer specially priced one-way flights for stranded Oasis passengers.

Oasis chief executive Stephen Miller held a news conference to announce the shutdown but did not give any details of why it had happened.

The Hong Kong Economic Times reported that the airline was struggling with debts of up to one billion Hong Kong dollars ($128m).

Soaring fuel bills have forced other airlines out of business recently, including the Hawaiian airline Aloha and the business class airline Maxjet.

Not sure why Cathay helping out is funny but their offer is real and quite a decent one at that. For example out of YVR

Not sure Cathay had a choice. Apparently, the HKG government was leaning hard on them.

It'll be fascinating to see if the gang at YVR hold the appropriate deposits, or had the smarts to ensure that Oasis bills were paid at least weekly.

The LAA's claim to be business-focussed. Let's see if they were smart enough to be able to figure out which company's had / have weak financial covenants, and might be in trouble with $110 oil.Hint: Let's start with the guys offering all the $99 transatlantic flights, as well as the domestic charter guys like Sunwing....

Guess who ends up paying for their mistakes, as they congratulate themselves after having built the Taj Mahal and paid out millions of other peoples money to be the "Official Airport of 2010 Olympics"..... rolleyes.gif
