Central Mountain Air in BC and AB has already started doing their own operations and now only use 4 of their 14 B1900D's for operations with Air Canada.. all the rest are used on their own routes and for charter operations. I beleive they have a couple a/c also leased to NT air.

Atlantic Coast had to take control of their own destiny, staying the course and hoping for things to workout wasn't really an option. Being at the mercy of a bankrupt airline, and another airline headed for an epic bloodbath isn't a very attractive proposition.

They had to do something,

But they were also in a position that made their transformation a practical idea,

They are targeting Northern Virginia, which is filthy rich.

Residents frequently travel to Baltimore for lower fares.

ACA has great facilities at Dulles, they can hit the ground running

Southwest is in Baltimore and Norfolk, JetBlue has very limited service to Dulles and doesn't have the capacity to increase it in the near future.

Today they are already serving 13 destinations from Dulles, and that will grow to 36 destinations going into the fall. JetBlue is serving Sacramento, Longbeach, Fort Lauderdale and Oakland. Independence Air will expand into transcon service once their 319's arrive.

The orther regionals will have to confront this, If their sugar daddies go down it's fly or die.

I'm very sorry to inform you that the mothercorp is years ahead of the curve by bankrupting its money-making subsidiary while handing over jobs to its own pilots and, at the very same time awarding the competition with market share. And, to save face, takes the competition to court.

Yes- believe it or not. Not only that, but pilot squabbling has continued, and they insist on handing over regional jet flying with new aircraft in exactly the same fashion to its mailine pilots as they had done previously. This will make its regional subsidiary look much more like the mailine, as long as its money-making ability is cut down, then it can no longer cause embarassment.

"the mothercorp is years ahead of the curve by bankrupting its money-making subsidiary"

Huh? Jazz lost 90 million in 2002. I know, I know it is all smoke and mirrors. Creative accounting to make the mother corp look better.

"while handing over jobs to its own pilots"

Huh? 25 CRJ100's headed to Jazz from the mainline in the next year and a half. Jazz fleet to grow from less than 100 to 135 by 2006. Mainline fleet to shrink then rebound by 2007 to status quo.

"they insist on handing over regional jet flying with new aircraft in exactly the same fashion to its Mainline pilots as they had done previously."

The emb190 is the size of a DC9............are you trying to redefine what a regional jet is?

"This will make its regional subsidiary look much more like the mainline, as long as its money-making ability is cut down, then it can no longer cause embarrassment"

Rrrright. AC is doing all this restructuring so they can continue to lose money. DB likes the idea of pissing away money. Cerberus makes a habit of investing in restructured companies with no hope of profit.

Reduce freeloading mainline pilots and permanently layoff- oh, about 1750 or so- about half and then give the flying over to regional.

Sounds good OB.

I bet Jazz could fly the 320's for cheaper too. Actually why stop there....the 767's and 340's to boot. There are some 747's not being used by year end. Actually while you are at it why not just wipe out the mainline all together. Jazz could do it all. It would be fantastic .........

....wait a minute CMA is cheaper than you Jazz guys......so scratch all that. Just give everything to CMA. Yeah that's it. Besides they have been unjustly treated by the Jazz scope language. I can just smell how much money.....

......wait a minute........what if AC went to a flying school and asked the students if they would fly for free if AC gave them a 767 endorsement. Can you imagine.....free pilots.......

......this is a great idea....we could.......wait a minute.......training bonds........Yeah! The new pilots will have to pay AC for the privallege.......

OK I have the business plan as far as pilots all figured out. How do we get free FA's?

Air Creebec resuming flights grounded during COVID-19

Airline says it will resume 3 flights a week from Montreal to Cree communities

CBC News · Posted: Aug 18, 2020 11:21 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Air Creebec said it is increasing disinfection protocols on its aircraft and offices, as well as implementing mandatory mask-wearing and physical distancing, as it brings back passenger flights. (Air Creebec/Jean-Philppe Richard)

Air Creebec will resume flight service to Cree communities, according to a news release Tuesday.

The airline grounded passenger flights earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and reduced its workforce by 50 per cent. It continued essential services such as medical charters to get patients to appointments in the South.

Air Creebec, which is owned by the Quebec Cree Nation and based in Waskaganish, Que., connects Cree communities to larger cities, such as Val d'Or, Chibougamau and Montreal.

The airline said this week that it will resume three flights a week from Montreal to the Cree communities. It will also offer a regular flight between Val-d'Or and Montreal.

"After discussions with the Cree Health Board and Public Health, Air Creebec recognizes that there is some essential travel required, such as other medical personnel, workers for urgent community needs and, in some instances, families reuniting," the news release said.

Matthew Happyjack, president of Air Creebec, told CBC in April that it had started gradually reducing passenger service in mid-March as they saw the numbers drop. He said communities also wanted to minimize people coming in.

"The health and safety of our passengers, clients and employees is Air Creebec's primary goal and we are not willing to sacrifice this for financial reasons," Happyjack said in the statement this week.

The airline said it is increasing disinfection protocols on its aircraft and offices, as well as implementing mandatory mask-wearing and physical distancing.

It intends to start the limited schedule the week of Aug. 24, which will be posted on the airline's website.

Central Mountain Air Announces Service Into Castlegar

9M.png

17 September 2020

Service will launch on October 1st, flights are available for booking immediately. Service will launch on October 1st, flights are available for booking immediately.

Today, Central Mountain Air announced service between Vancouver and Castlegar starting on October 1st. The service will be provisioned with Beechcraft 1900D aircraft, which doesn’t have side-by-side seating and allows for physical distancing on all flights.

Castlegar is known as a challenging airport due to weather and its location. Central Mountain Air is well equipped to fly this route as they’ve been flying to airports across British Columbia since 1987. This provincial familiarity will help in providing as reliable of a schedule as the weather permits. Moreover, mid-day flights create the highest probability for good weather and connectivity into broader airline networks.

“We know our airport is important to the region, and we’ve been working tirelessly to bring passenger service back to customers looking for travel options at the West Kootenay Regional Airport,” says Mayor of Castlegar, Bruno Tassone. “Safety will be our top priority, and we’re implementing new COVID-19 health and safety measures in the terminal and on flights to ensure the public can feel confident when travelling with us.”

Our safety protocols enable us to confidently protect you and your loved ones. During COVID-19, we have introduced new and expanded existing procedures regarding our aircraft, facilities, customers and employees, along with adjusted check-in and in-flight procedures. Examples are cleaning on every turn and the vigilance of all parties wearing masks. We have sanitization goodie bags with masks and wipes for everyone on board and gloves for those that request them. We have also extended our flexible change policy to include all fares for the booking availability period of service into Castlegar.

“Central Mountain Air would like to thank the City of Castlegar for their support in bringing air service to the region.”, said Bob Cummings, CEO of Central Mountain Air. “We are committed to enabling economic recovery in the region and safely connecting Castlegar and the surrounding community with relatives and friends. We look forward to seeing you on board.”

Canada's Air North to benefit from top-up government relief

Canada's Air North (4N, Whitehorse Int'l) will receive a shot in the arm with the announcement that the federal government will provide up to CAD7 million Canadian dollars (USD5.3 million) in additional top-up relief funding for air carriers in the Yukon territory.

This was an addition to CAD12.4 million in supplementary government funding for the Yukon in general because of COVID-19, the government announced in a statement on October 9, 2020.

The supplementary funding is made in terms of the federal government’s CAD 19 billion (USD14.4 billion) Safe Restart Agreement announced in July to help provinces and territories safely restart their economies. Under this agreement, the northwest territories of Yukon and Nunavut will receive top-up funds of more than CAD37 million (USD28.2 million) for health care services and to support remote populations.

Also, the territories will receive up to CAD41.41 million (USD31.58 million) in support for air carriers to ensure reliable air services to remote communities. This is on top of a CAD17.3 million (USD13.1 million) investment for northern air carriers announced on April 14 and reflects part of CAD75 million (USD57.2 million) in funding to support essential air access to remote communities announced on August 6, 2020, the government said.

The announcement is expected to bring welcome relief to Air North, which recently warned it would have to retrench more employees if government subsidies were to stop. The airline is the primary beneficiary of airline state funding to Yukon to ensure the continued operation of critical routes to the North. Amongst others, it has received help from the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) programme, which the government recently announced it would also extend until “summer next year” as it promises to restore employment in Canada to pre-pandemic levels.

"Air carriers are vital for the well-being and livelihood of people who live in remote communities. Funding air carriers, so the Yukon government can support essential travel and deliver essential goods, is another example of how our government is committed to keeping all Canadians safe and healthy during this pandemic," said Transport Minister, Marc Garneau.

"Critical work still needs to be done with this additional new funding, especially to continue to help the most vulnerable, and the essential lifeline that Air North so magnificently keeps available to all of us,” commented Yukon Member of Parliament, Larry Bagnell.

Government of Canada announces agreement with Government of Yukon to support essential air access to remote communities

transport-canada-2.png?w=400

OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 9, 2020 /CNW/ – The COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant impact on remote communities that depend on small air carriers for essential goods, services, and for access in and out of the community. As the pandemic continues to evolve, the Government of Canada is working with partners, including provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous partners, and the air industry to address the unique needs of these communities.

Today, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, the Minister of Northern Affairs, the Honourable Daniel Vandal, and the Minister of Highways and Public Works for the Government of Yukon, the Honourable Richard Mostyn, announced a new agreement with the Government of Yukon to support essential air access to remote communities.

The Government of Canada is contributing up to $7 million to ensure continuity of service for at least six months and up to 18 months if necessary. The Government of Yukon is also extending fee waivers totalling up to $234,000, through to the end of March 2021.

Under this agreement, the Government of Yukon will determine minimum levels of essential services to remote communities, and allocate funding to air operators to ensure the continued supply of food, medical supplies, and other essential goods and services to these communities.

Porter Airlines updates tentative restart of flights to March 29

porter.jpg?w=200

TORONTO, Jan. 11, 2021 /CNW/ – Porter Airlines is establishing March 29 as a revised tentative date for restarting flights based on the continuing surge in COVID-19 cases and corresponding public health measures.

“With the introduction of vaccines, we are more optimistic about determining a date in the near-term to reintroduce flights than at any point since the pandemic began,” said Michael Deluce, president and CEO of Porter Airlines. “More time is needed to assess the vaccine’s influence on current travel restrictions and when it is appropriate to begin operations again. We expect to establish a timeline for this to happen in the first part of 2021.”

A further update will be provided this winter based on the status of the pandemic and the evolution of government measures that may promote greater freedom to travel.

Porter temporarily suspended operations on March 21, 2020, due to COVID-19.

Central Mountain Air to suspend key regional routes

Continued lack of government support adversely affecting vital air service

Airline calls on communities to engage all levels of government to support essential air services

SMITHERS, BC, Jan. 19, 2021 /CNW/ – Today, Central Mountain Air (CMA) announced it will suspend service on three regional routes. The routes will be suspended from February 3, 2021, to at least April 5, 2021. This action by CMA follows their decision earlier this month to suspended service from Prince George to Fort St. John as the company continues to deal with the crushing economic impact of the pandemic. No other airline operates these affected routes.

“Devastating declines in travel and extended provincial health advisories against non-essential travel have necessitated a significant scaling back of our scheduled operations for the foreseeable future,” commented Bob Cummings, Central Mountain Air’s CEO. “The federal government has been promising for almost a year that help is on the way to support these essential air services, but no such support has been received or clearly outlined. Our customers and the communities we serve are bearing the brunt of this inaction. In addition to supporting the local economies with the transport of essential workers, our airline and its dedicated staff fly customers to medical treatments and transport medical supplies, mail, and other vital cargo.

Route Changes

Between Dates
Fort Nelson / Prince George Suspended February 3 to earliest May 3
Kamloops / Prince George Suspended February 3 to earliest April 5
Edmonton* / High Level Suspended February 3 to earliest May 3
Vancouver / Kamloops Starts April 5, 2x weekly
*Note: Edmonton has a charter base with an opportunity for ad hoc charter requests.”

Recognizing the crucial link our airline provides to the communities we serve, CMA continued to operate these routes, with one short suspension, since the start of the pandemic (March April 2020) while sustaining losses. For more than ten months, CMA leadership has sought to engage the federal government in support of airports and airlines, particularly in more remote areas. However, the promised necessary financial support has not materialized. At this time, without direct government support to assist in maintaining operations until demand resumes, CMA can no longer continue the provision of these essential air services.

“We also need the continued support of the communities we serve,” continued Bob Cummings. If you rely on our services and would like to voice your view that scheduled air services are critical to your community, we ask you to contact your MLA, MP, Premier or the federal Minister of Transport. With government support, we would be proud to continue to serve our customers and maintain crucial airline connectivity in British Columbia and Alberta until demand returns. If there is any chance to save vital air service to these communities, action must be urgently undertaken.”
