  1. The starlink satellites look very interesting if you can see the "train" moving across the sky.
  2. One can only hope that Captain Casey was not conscious for that horrific sequence of events in the few seconds after departing the aircraft.
  3. Lots of expansion but it is not like WJ and AC will stay out of these markets when air travel returns to viability. I won't be long before there is overcapacity in many of these markets and then we will see who has the deepest pockets.

  5. This is one of my pet peeves. The technique is very simple. Lift the reverse levers to the idle detent and maintain a slight pressure against the interlock, when conditions are met for deployment the lever will move, then select first or second detent reverse as required. No yanking needed.
  6. Getting this 3rd hand but it seems to explain certain anomalies According to Karachi Airport runway inspection report prepared by Pakistan CAA. Left engine scrape marks 4500 feet from runway start. Right engine scrape marks 5500 feet from runway start. Both engines scrape marks 6000 feet to 7000 feet from runway start. On the first attempt they called "established ILS 25L, 5 miles" while the tower responded that they were at "3,500 feet" which is too high for 5 miles. Tower offered vectors for a left 360 to reduce altitude but they declined. Accidentally landed with gears up, damaged engines in process, went around and completely lost engines on finals. The crew was unprofessional. This was no accident. It was pilot error. On the first approach, the aircraft maintained an overall flight path angle of 6.57 degrees (as opposed to the normal 3 degrees). The tower offered them a left-360 so that they could loose altitude gradually. They declined the offer and said they were "comfortable" and "established on ILS 25L" (which means both the glide slope and the localizer). Here, the pilots were actually dishonest as they were too high (3,500' at 5 miles instead of being 3,000' at 10 miles) to be on the glide slope. With such a steep approach (20% steeper than London City airport's 5.5 degrees and 100% steeper than Karachi's 3 degrees), they forgot to deploy the landing gear. The engine pods made contact with the runway thrice and damaged the main fans of both the engines. The pilots knew they had **bleep** up and in an apparent attempt to cover up their mistake, they tried to go around. The damage to the engines was serious and after over-temping the engine cores a couple minutes later due to the damaged main fans, the engines quit completely by the time they were on short finals the second time.
  7. I doubt there will be much 3rd party or even 1st party sim training taking place for some time to come. WestJet just cancelled all 3rd party and out of country simulator training. TC will be busy handing out extensions for a while it seems.

  13. The B737-800 is a runway pig on landing. At 145,000lbs the AB3 landing distance shows 7690 feet, at 125,000lbs (an average landing weight) the distance only reduces to just under 7000 feet so a shortened runway to 6000 feet is definitely an issue in an -800. To get below 6000 feet you have to used AB MAX or MAX Manual braking, WB MAX shows 5520 and Max Manual shows 4420. What these pax experienced was likely Max Manual braking which on a dry runway in quite aggressive and certainly wouldn't be a normal experience for a passenger.

  19. Yea, what Seeker said. Some humility on your part would definitely be a good thing. I see from your profile that you have been around this board since 2004 so maybe you just missed the previous explanations. Jack is a highly regarded and much beloved Ex Air Atlantic, and LTDed WestJet pilot who suffered a serious stroke a few years ago while on a pairing. Not using the spacebar is the least of Gentleman Jack's concerns.
  20. It sounds like the obstacle (which has been there for years with seemingly no ill effects) has caused the need for the threshold to be displaced almost 500 feet. Doing this would negate any straight in non-precision minima currently published for that runway end and cause circling minima, with the appropriately higher weather minima to become governing. The RNAV Y approach has minima of 500AGL all the other approaches are between 1490 and 2110 AGL and the RNAV Y has been NOTAMed unusable. So an equipment/facilities issue becomes a weather issue due to the much higher minima.
  21. There has been a high level concept floated to the non-unionized employee groups on the continuation of a “similar” plan. It is however very light on details and doesn’t meet the needs of a replacement plan for the higher income earners as the limits in place would amount to a compensation decrease. That being said WestJet has done this before. In the years before the IPO WestJet issued “shares” in the then privately held company. These are the shares that made many of the original WestJet employees quite wealthy. As with any major compensation change the devil will be in the details.
  22. I hate those kiosks. They are not particularly user friendly, don’t work properly a lot of the time and even if you fill out your declaration in the app you end up having to confirm and/or answer most of the questions again. The line ups at customs in YYZ any given day during the wide body arrival crunch are nothing short of insane. I consistently see very confused arriving visitors spending up to 5 minutes trying to figure out the kiosks and then wondering why the camera is rising 3 feet above their head to take a picture. I have a hard time believing that they are any more efficient that just lining up and speaking to an officer. Oh yea I forget you still have to do that too.
  23. I wonder what happened to hydraulic lockouts, pins or other safe guards. 3000psi in a hydraulic system is not to be trifled with.
  24. Not that I am in the business of defending Swoop but apparently they have one tail down for air con cleaning due to a fume event and then a boarding pax threw coins into one of the engines for good luck. These would definitely class as unplanned in anyone’s book.
