  7. I have a hard earned (lots of cargo) 1000 hours of DC3/C47 time and one or more of my airline’s fleet participated on D-Day. Can’t remember which tails but this one returned to the US and back into its former paint.
  8. Loved flying the Twin Otter. All wheels and tundra tires but always wanted to try it on floats. So glad Viking has brought it back to life (and the DHC2T) because there are so many places in the world for this particular airplane to find work. It was unfortunate Boeing couldn’t see this back in the 90’s when they owned Dehav and was parked because of the politics of the times. In the 1980s, the Government of Canada privatized DHC and in 1986 sold the aircraft company to then Seattle-based Boeing.[2][11] The government claimed to have guarantees from Boeing not to discontinue any product lines, but shortly thereafter, Boeing discontinued both the successful Twin Otter and the Dash 7. The jigs and specialised equipment for their manufacture were destroyed. Boeing was in heavy competition with Airbus Industrie for a series of new airliners for Air Canada, at that time a Canadian Crown corporation. Boeing used the DHC purchase to further strengthen their commitment to their shared production contracts. The contract was particularly contentious.   12. These class action suits about airport and airplane noise drive me crazy. Hard to believe that in 2019 people buy homes in the Dorval area and fail to notice there are planes flying around. But that’s only been since 1941. It is now the third busiest airport in Canada by passenger traffic. Before the Mirabel experiment it was just as busy with the same international flights it hosts today with much noisier vintage of aircraft.   13. Several of the A380 operators already have standup bars/lounges so many people are not properly seated in flight but I think a self-service food distribution would have more passengers standing and not strapped into their seats. A can of Pringles or being able to walk after the flight?
  14. I think the AC/TransAt merger is only going to increase leisure package ticket pricing. TransAt were the ones keeping the fares competitive and now that will soon be gone.

  16. You’re quite right. Although Boeing has more serious issues currently there was a planned meeting on Monday in Seattle to determine the fate of this orphaned test plane. Apparently the list of possible future owners is long and I think it will remain somewhere on the west coast. The chances of it arriving in Canada were slim.
  17. I am told the A220 former CSeries is a nice combination of both Airbus and Boeing flight decks. The Bombardier engineers also spent a lot of time ensuring overhead indicator and switchlights were angled in such a way that pilots wont’t have to twist their necks or go ‘full recline’ to see something clearly. This is only one of many well thought out ideas designed into this Canadian made plane.
  18. Yes I think these schools really benefit from having more recent aircraft to work with and learn on during training. However, a 787 would require a large spot indoors or outside. Not sure if that’s available. BCIT has a 737-200 from Westjet at their YVR campus. I recall that AC donated a DC-9 years ago to another Western tech school. Perhaps learning to work outside in the snow and sub-zero weather is the best environment for future Canadian engineers as that is where the broken plane is usually found.
  19. A friend has emailed me regarding a 787 which was used as a test aircraft and still in flyable condition for static display. Other than that I don’t have any other details at the moment. Perhaps it could be used for a tech school such as Centennial or BCIT for example. Standby for further.

  22. This time of year is the normal start-up for most Northern Canadian operators and with that usually new pilots starting out their careers. The Beaver wasn’t an entry level plane in my float days so I’m curious to know who is at the controls of these classic bush planes.
