  2. There is no comparison to the military selection process as compared to a cadet program or college program or flying school. That is not to say that the military system is the be all and end all but it attracts a different kind of individual that requires not only aviation skills but officer leadership skills and capabilities. Tolerances are much more restricted and the ability to perform within a required time frame is much more prevalent than in other programs.
  3. If you want to be terrorized by excessive carry on baggage fly Allegiant Airways. They are great. From check in to boarding don't even think of carrying anything oversize or overweight. On the positive side ,flights are cheap, they board in record time without the great unwashed bringing bags that probably surpass the excessive weight category as a carry on.   4. I don't know if it is still around but many years ago the British AAIB produced a video for accident investigator training. The group was told that there would be some type of emergency.They used a simulator,gave the passengers the standard emergency briefing and then the fun began. They simulated a water landing and filmed the passengers trying to put their life-jackets on. From a safety point of view it was hard to watch but certainly entertaining enough to qualify for "funniest video" The bottom line is what others have said in the above thread. Nobody pays attention to the safety briefing
  5. As a general rule of thumb the aircraft conducting a water landing under controlled circumstances would land gear up, flaps full, in a high nose attitude. Depending upon touchdown technique and water conditions( Swell etc.)the aircraft would settle in the water and the engines would break off their pylons. After that it is any anybody's guess what happens. I investigated an accident in the Caribbean where the aircraft struck the water after a second go around ( basically drove it straight in the water). Witnesses observed the aircraft striking the water but there was absolutely no wreckage fou
  6. The app "Flight View" is pretty good with tracking flights both inbound and outbound. Although it does not display why flights are delayed it usually tells you where the incoming aircraft is.

  8. While we are on radio topics please explain why pilots use "oh" as a number. It is not a number it is a letter!! It is "zero". Having said that the media continue to say "oh" as well instead of zero.

  10. Makes sense. I have always used 2 times plus the altitude lost plus 1/6 of the groundspeed . Worked for the 727 and the A320.
  11. This is not new. I flew the Sea King in 1972 and it was unbelievable what kind of garbage you would see in the water off Halifax. During the time I flew the Argus for 3 years (1976-1979) it was truly amazing what a cesspool the ocean had become. It didn't matter whether you were in the North Atlantic or in the Azores or Bermuda the amount of crap/garbage floating on the surface was disgusting. It was hard to spot a sub snorkelling because of the garbage. Just fly around the Russian fishing fleet with the factory ships and it was appalling to see what was in the water.   13. I believe it was night when this event took place. I used to fly the "Argus" and trust me the ocean at night flying low level is not a very friendly place. It is hard to believe that whoever was flying that aircraft, if indeed anyone was in control of the plane would have the skill level to fly low level over the ocean at night without disastrous consequences.
  14. In the Air India accident in 1985 the wreckage settled in 5000 feet of water in a valley between an underwater mountain range. The sea bed was absolutely flat. The wreckage was in 3 distinct parts, the cockpit, forward fuselage and aft fuselage. The interesting part was the 4 engines were found separately north of the wreckage pattern. It was never explained why that occurred. Perhaps ocean current. The wreckage had parts that were relatively small in size and larger pieces such as the cockpit are which was estimated to weigh approximately 25,000 pounds. The limiting problem in that investigat
