Surely a company has every right to do so unless it was written into the terms of their collective agreement?
Ford faces class action lawsuit
WINDSOR, Ontario, Feb 8, 2010 (UPI via COMTEX) --
A Canadian judge has granted class action status to a lawsuit filed by employees against Ford Motor Co. for failing to add a work shift to an assembly plant.
The suit says Ford had decided in April 2008 to add a third shift its Oakville, Ontario, factory, but then changed its mind and canceled the additional work just prior to the start date of July 28, 2008.

If there were adequate notes taken during the negotiations, and if the company is recorded as having used a third shift promise as an inducement to ratification of the contract, then the union has a case. My question is why this is going before the civil courts and not in front of the appropriate labour adjudicators?

The suit has been brought on behalf of all individuals, including the estates of deceased individuals, who were offered employment by Ford as general assemblers in connection with the planned third shift.
