The Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa has a Mig-21 cockpit as part of a hands on display along with a Tudor and CF-18. We have lots of experience with the Tudor and CF-18 cockpit but we are struggling with identifying switches and instruments in the Mig. Most of the writing is in Cyrillic and a smatering of German.

Does anybody know where we can get any info on the layout and switch/instrument names? We Googled it but without a whole lot of success.

This part of the Aviation museum is very popular with kids of all ages and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered asking a local Russian language tutor for help?

Here is a goto to a PDF document on the Mig 21 that includes a labelled (english) view of the cockpit.  It may be of some help

Hi Bryon...great to see you here...welcome!

First thing, what kind of Mig 21 is it?

I wonder if Jeff Lewis might be able to help with the controls/indicators etc?

Malcolm found what I thought was a good site. I'll bet there's a manual online somewhere!

Can you send me a few hi-quality photographs of the cockpit?

Some Google results:

http://www.flight-ma....com/MIG21.html

http://www.lulu.com/...nglish)/3466022

http://www.ebay.com/...l-/310293723349

A Mig-23 manual...perhaps of some help. Big file 9.5Mb...285 pages from the manual including cockpit drawings and labels. The reproduction isn't the best and is difficult to read in places...also, I think it may be incomplete.

We have at least 3 pilots at WS who are of Russian origin,  all from the civilian side I believe. If you send me your contact info via PM I can pass it on to one who is a good friend who may be able to help.

Cheers
Dave

If you have some contact information I can pass it on to a Soviet trained MiG-21 pilot who lives in Calgary.

H Bryon,
This site is dated 2010 so I hope it is current. They have (Had?) a flying Mig 21 and Reg, (We were on the same squadrons together) is current on it according to the site,
Not sure I would like to have to cover the fuel bill when they use the burner on it. :Grin-Nod:
They may be able to help.

I was talking to an Air Canada pilot who owns one, a few months ago.  He told me it costs him a minimum $6000 every time he takes it up, but it's the best 6 grand he ever spent!

Thank you all for such a quick response. I have pm'd a few of you and the manual will be a great help to our volunteers who man the station. I found out today that the museum has acquired a Mig ( not sure what model) they joke it came from IKEA as it is in millions of pieces but the museum hopes to reconstruct it and display it on the floor. As for the Russian language specialist it just occurred to me that I have a CSIS friend who is conversant in the language.

Once again thank you all very much, just one more example of what a wonderful group of aviation professionals there are in the aviation community.

Don,  I'll be in touch

Thank you all....Bryon

Yes Bryon, it is good to see you on here!

I look forward to the day when they have that MiG fully assembled and on display. A great addition to the already impressive collection!
